Would be hard to draw direct comparisons based on the line up we know so far for example a 2010 Trail edition will have many different specs to a 2009 trail edition etc.
So time will tell.

Prices for 4Runners really haven't changed much except for the top of the line fully loaded models. My '99 Highlander stickered over $35k and my mom's '99 Limited was over $37k. What does $35k get you in a 4th gen? In many cases the SE models stickered cheaper than my '99 but it showed a little with the 4th gen with some cheaper interior plastics and no auto up and down windows (and a few other things here and there) but they added a V8 and better lights, added a few more electronic/safety goodies but all in all Toyota has kept 4Runner prices in check.

I agree with you about the prices, but when you really step back and take a good look at the 3rd gen vs. the 4th gen, the price checks seems even more impressive.
Consider the safety items (which you mentioned already) that add a lot of cost to any vehicle. Just the additional airbag systems alone, including side & curtain airbags on the 4th gen should have added significant costs.
Consider the engines. Forget about the V8, which was basically already a carry-over from other Toyota models, but what about the V6? It's was an all-new engine design, completely aluminum and much more power (yet fuel efficient) compared to the 3rd gen engine. That also should have added significant cost to the 4th gen.
You also have all the small things, like bigger wheels/tires, LED and projector lighting, available XREAS suspension, etc... that all add cost to the bottom line. I'm actually shocked that we can still buy a new 4th gen that costs about the same as a 3rd gen did 10 years ago. And now it looks like the 5th gen pricing will stay about the same as well, although it does look like some of the small things are going away in order for them to keep the prices at the same level. But overall, it is very impressive when you consider that SUV prices in general have continued to rise.
