No remote entry???

Hi all! It's been a while, but I'm happy to be back with my 4th 3rd gen!

I purchased a 2002 sport edition and it came with only a key, no fobs. I called the stealership to get one, and they looked up my VIN saying it never came with keyless entry . I find this odd since it has power doors, windows, etc...

I was considering installing a combo start/keyless entry like this one:
Amazon.com : Avital 4103LX Remote Start System with Two 4-Button Remote : Vehicle Remote Start : Car Electronics

Does anyone have any experience with this situation? Recommendations on an aftermarket product?

I am surprised that you wouldn't have keyless. I thought most all sports came with it. I would first try programing a remote for the T4R and see if the locks cycle. If they do just buy a keyless remote off ebay for $20. Just an FYI I think it took me 4 or 5 times to get the sequence correct.

Here are the instruction for programing the keyless remote. If you get to step 5 and the locks cycle you have keyless and just need to buy a remote. If not, then look for a keyless entry system.

1. Start with the following conditions: you are in the vehicle

a. Key is out of the ignition
b. Drive door is open ( all other doors are closed)
c. Driver door is unlocked (other door locks don't matter)

2. Insert the key into the ignition (don't turn it) and pull it out.

3. Perform these steps within 40 seconds:

a. Cycle the power locks 5 times. Use an even pace and try
to go relatively fast.

b. Close, then open the drivers door.

4. Perform these steps within 40 seconds:

a. Cycle the power locks 5 times (same as before).
b. Turn the ignition to ON then back to OFF.
c. Turn the ignition to ON then back to OFF.
d. Remove the key from the ignition.

5. Within 3 seconds, the power door locks should cycle (automatically)
indicating successful entry into programming mode. Return to step 1
if the locks do not cycle at this point.

6. Perform these steps within 40 seconds:

a. Press the LOCK and UNLOCK buttons on the transmitter
simultaneously for 1 second.

b. Immediately after letting go of the lock and unlock buttons,
press the lock button by itself and hold for 2 seconds.
Within 3 seconds, the door locks should cycle ( LOCK then
UNLOCK) once-- indicating successful programming. If
the door locks don't cycle, or cycle twice. Repeat steps
6a and 6b--this remote has not been accepted.

c. Repeat steps 6a and 6b for EACH transmitter that will
operate the vehicle. Including any old transmitters.

7. Close the driver door.

Best of luck!

I have had that same Avital system for 2+ years and love it. Most people think remote start is only good for the winter...but I use the hell out of mine in the summer too.
If you need the remotes anyways, why not go for the remote start as well?

Look under your driver seat...do you see a small black box, roughly 4"x4"? If so, you have the keyless system already, just need a remote. I'd still get the Avital though...

I would not expect to see a box on a 2002. Factory Keyless was built in to the Body ECU and Back-door ECU with no separate box (unlike your '98). The only dealer/port option was the RS3200 Alarm system and then he would have seen the arming LED on the dash. You could look for the chirper thingy in the rear passenger corner of the engine bay on the fender wall. It looks like this:

No chirper, no factory keyless. I base all this on this document:

Thanks for all the pointers. I tried going through the programming steps to see if the locks automatically cycled. I think I went through the steps about 6 times, to the point where I had it down! Nothing happened. I looked for the black box under the seat. No go. I looked for the chirper thing, and there it was.

I do remember the alarm light in the cabin on my other 3rd Gen's, but I don't see it on this one. I can't imagine that there would be power locks without remote entry... Any chance there are different steps for programming?

I'll stop by the stealership tomorrow for confirmation.

Sweet! I did some more looking around on the forums because I was so frustrated by the fact that I obviously have keyless entry.

I found some other instructions that vary slightly from the ones above.

1. Start with key out of ignition, drivers door is open all others closed and
drivers door is unlocked.
2. Insert key into the ignition (Do NOT Turn) and Pull key out.
3. Perform these steps within 40 seconds.
A. Using the power lock switch on the drivers door, perform 5 lock/unlock cycles starting with lock. Use an even pace and try to go about one cycle per second. (1Cycle = 1 lock and 1 unlock).
B. Close, then open drivers door.
4. Perform these steps within 40 seconds.
A. Using the power lock switch on the drivers door, perform 5 lock/unlock cycles starting with lock. Use an even pace and try to go about one cycle per second. (1Cycle = 1 lock and 1 unlock).
B. Insert the key in the ignition cylinder.
C. Turn the ignition to ON (Do NOT Start) then back to OFF once to program remote while retaining the orginal remote codes. Twice to erase all orginal codes and add new remote. Three times to check how many remotes are programmed or five times to erase all original codes.
D. Remove the key from the ignition.
5. Within 3 seconds the power door locks should cycle automatically indicating successful entry into programming mode. Return to step 1 if the locks do not cycle at this point.
6. Perform these steps within 40 seconds.
A. Press the lock and unlock buttons on the remote simultaneously for 1 second.
B. Immediately after letting go of the lock and unlock buttons, press the lock button by itself and hold for 2 seconds. Within 3 seconds, the door locks should cycle onceindicating successful programming. If the door locks do not cycle, or cycle twice. repeat steps A and B in step 6 as your remote has not been accepted.
C. Repeat steps A and B in step 6 for each new remote.
7. Close drivers door.

When I went through 5 on/off cycles with the key, the locks finally cycled. So, mystery solved.

On the other hand, I read that a new remote has to have the same FCC ID as the original.... how do I determine that?!?

Found more info... hope this helps someone at some point.

I found this website that lists all the 4Runner fobs and FCC ID's by year. Looks like I'm looking for the HYQ1512Y.

4Runner

I'll order one off ebay and cross my fingers!

That info, and a drawing of the remote, was in the document I posted for you. It also directs you to the correct instructions which are here (p. BE-98):

My key fob used to work (lock, unlock, rear window, panic) but now only the lock works. I have no idea why and I have never been able to get info on it. I would try to reprogram it but my actuators are not powerful enough to get threw the lock/unlock cycles.

I've got the avital 5303, some of you guys way up north/cold areas might like the programmable starts every few hours or specific time of day or based on interior temp, runs a set amt of time you determine, awesome with texas heat to have remote start. one fob has displays of all types of info. multiple levels of bump/intrusion detection. You may need an additional communication device to go with the oem underdash security setup, check into that before you buy whatever brand. Luck!

Read my thread I posted yesterday on this: http://www.toyota-4runner.org/3rd-gen-t4rs/171836-2001-sport-keyless-entry-remote.html

00-02 has the RS3200 system which is ONLY available on the 3rd gen as a DEALER installed option. This system only came FACTORY installed 03+.

I am pretty sure this is the remote you need: 08191-00922

Its $40~

That's the only ALARM, which was a Dealer OPTION. But many '01-'02 had the factory keyless entry (no alarm) and he is ordering the correct remote for that (89742-35020). If he had the Dealer option RS3200 alarm, he would have an LED on the dash, as far as I can tell.

His truck responded to the programming actions for the factory keyless-only system so that is what he has.

I bought one (that same exact Avital 4103) for my wife's Volvo and she (we) loves it. I will be buying one for my 4Runner. I also have power everything on my 4Runner, so it should be a seamless transition.

Oh I see!

Can you confirm wether or not only the non-rear window button remote (2 button) will work with my 01 RS3200 system?

I went by the dealership today to get a definitive answer. Miraculously, armed with the exact same VIN, the system suddenly said I have wireless entry. He quoted me $110 for the remote + $55 for the programming. Part number came up:

89742-35021

I came home and searched for it, and thankfully, it would appear that I've ordered the correct remote... I think  (based on the website below):

REMOTES AND KEYS, HYQ1512Y, 89742-35021

Anyway, I'll let you know when I know in case it helps someone else.

Regarding the Avital, I was considering it when I thought I had no remote entry. It only costs $42 on amazon, plus I'd need the bypass system, but I don't know that I have the expertise or the cojones to start cutting wires without clear instructions. A local shop wants $279 for the unit installed (with by-pass). Just not really worth it to me.

I really do appreciate all the help!

Hmmm, did he say which system you had? Factory installed (RS3000) or dealer installed (RS3200)?

He has neither one. RS3000 is the '96-'99 Dealer/Port installed ALARM system (same number, but different in '96-'97). RS3200 is the '00--'02 Dealer/Port installed ALARM system. He has NO ALARM and no RS-anything. Just factory keyless entry for 2002. It doesn't have a system number any more than the brakes or the A/C systems do.

See the document you yourself posted.

That's what the TSB says...only the two button shown in Fig 5 of the TSB. I have no reason to think it's wrong.
