No reverse on 88 auto

Hey there!! Well, I picked up an 88 3.0 auto. Clean looking inside and out, so I felt like it was worth the troubles I would encounter. Vehicle had been sitting forever and had too swap a gas tank, fuel pump and bracket in her as rust had ruined the original tank. It goes forward in all gears pretty good, so I guess the torque converter works but not in reverse. Did some reading and wondering if it's a linkage adjustment or if this is a common failing of the auto trans. I do plan on removing the pan and cleaning the stainer. Is it possible to do a visual examination the the trans with the bottom pan off?

I'd assume it would be pretty hard to diagnose a tranny problem from looking at the inside of the pan, given that you are not a tranny mechanic. I do not know much about automatics though.

Does it try to move or just not engage at all? Do your reverse lights come on? If not it might be something like your linkage. My other guess is it could be something electronic. I had a 88 auto that started slipping (forward and reverse) and it was just the tranny was really f'ed up. Luckily they are pretty cheap to replace and easier to find than manuals. I replaced mine for $125 off CL. 150 miles later I blew the HG
