No sway bars you say?

I am sure I will get criticized for this but a couple of weeks ago I removed both of my sway bars to see if they were the issue causing a clunking noise on bumps and such. Well unfortunately it was not the cause of the clunking but it does not make the noise as much. I still have not found the cause but it feels like something is loose causing it to rock side to side or something. However, I am going to continue to run without my sway bars as the ride is smoother and the body roll is not excessive. It is only slightly more than when I had them on. Has anyone had body mounts that were worn that caused a popping noise or bad ball joints or control arms or anything that cause some noise when worn out? Any help would be appreciated. Thanks guys.

If you think that it makes no diffrence, try doing an emergency lane change and let us know how that goes for ya.

I wouldnt remove the rear swaybar if I were you. Thats dangerous as F*CK

I agree with Javelin, there really is no gain by removing the rear sway bar. As for the body roll, you probably don't have as much body roll, but if you drive like I do in my cars you'll notice a big difference.

Vehicles without sway bars dont cause accidents.... people driving vehicles without sway bars do. I have removed all sway/stabilizer bars front and rear as well as my rear lateral control rods and I guarantee that there are far more dangerous drivers on the road then me with far better handleing vehicles. Just dont swerve and avoid "emergency lane changes" which kinda sound dangerous anyhow!

As for the clunk, a better description of when it happens might help to get feedback on it. I had a clunk in my upper shock mount where it slid over the mounting pin when I turned (on boths sides) so I had to put a rubber washer in there to fix it. But that only happened when I turned.

Removing front and rear sway bars isn't unheard of in the T4R community. People do it to get maximum flex out of their IFS.

Don't remove it

Don't remove it. Think of it this way Toyota Engineers know more than you and that is Not an insult by the way.

I have my front removed with some good gains in travel off-road, and great handling on road(stiffer springs). But just extended the rear sway links as the rear sway bar isn't really preventing me from reaching full articulation of the current setup.

more so my rear sway bar is basicly my limit straps for my coil springs with the extended links theres no tension on the bar, however at full articulation it's the main component preventing me from loosing a coil spring. (I need about a .5" taller free height spring than i have now other wise that rubber boots the only thing saving me from chasing a coil spring down the hill lol)

I think I was in the original conversation started by the OP regarding this matter. Could have just posted on that thread instead of starting a whole new one, but regardless. I tried to say that I get clunk as well sometimes and said it wasn't the front sway bar because I don't run one. I'm starting to point to the joint (not sure if it qualifies as a heim joint or whatever) on my upper shock mount like Huskey eluded too. I've heard that these can be loud and am thinking that is what the "clunk" I'm hearing is. But if you have an OE style shock, then we're not experiencing the same issue... Coilover problems :)

Heres a link back to that original conversation: Link

Thank you guys for your opinions. As for the clunk the best I can tell is that it is separated front and rear as it does it in both. It may or may not be individual to each wheel. I cant tell for sure yet. The clunk usually isnt one loud clunk but rather two or three clunks like something is moving around. I need to hit a rather sharp bump to cause it to do this.

As for the sway bar issue, for the guys who feel that we need them, which sway bar would be most beneficial on and off road. I have started cleaning them up to put them back on with new bushings and links. But I want to start with just one for a bit.

Again, thank you for your help.

Just an update on the clunking noise I have been hearing. It turns out that the link rod on the rear axle, the one on the back end (panhard bar?) had one of the bolts loose. While drilling out a broken bolt for my rear sway bar I noticed that when I grabbed it I could move it and make some noise with it. Tightened the bolt down good and now there is no noise in my suspension at all! Needless to say I feel very stupid and happy at the same time. Now to reinstall the sway bars with some energy suspension parts and the end links that pearlj10 is building (great guy to deal with!). Should be very stable on the road once done. Thank you guys for your responses. Maybe this could help someone else that has some noises in their suspension.

Yeah, just don't wreck your car and avoid dangerous situations! Simple!

I also don't wear seatbelts and I pulled the fuse for the ABS, VSC, and airbags to save weight, those are just for bad drivers who get into wrecks, but not me
