Are you kiddin me? My 4 Runner is a great vehicle, but I've talked to so many people who share my opinion - the abs is a little over-zealous in application. Can somebody at least respond that they feel the same way too? My last 2 posts recieved 0 responses. Maybe it's just '96's, anybody have a '98 or another year that they LIKE the abs on slippery surfaces? Anyones' opinions, please!

I do agree that the ABS might be a little bit "overzealous" but the whole point of ABS is to prevent the wheels from locking up and potentially killing you, no?
I have a 1998 and it mostly over-reacts in wet and slippery situations (which is good). Not off-road or dry pavement.

The only time I really hate abs is during winter when there is snow/ice on the ground. I have noticed that when I am not in 4wd, it takes less braking to activate it. I don't see the point in leaving it in 4wd when the traction is pretty good. I just drive slower and take my time. I know abs is supposed to be a safety device, but to me it is a pain! I have heard some people say that abs has caused some accidents too.

I also feel that the ABS is waay to intrusive. It often activates when i am stopping moderatley, not jamming on the breaks by any means. I have driven in the rain one time for a few miles and it never went off, but i didnt try it either. I just got my 4runner about 3 weeks ago or so. I do know that the ABS does not activate in reverse though.

I am not too sure what to think about the ABS on my '99. It seems to engage often on uneven, dry pavement. It has been a little annoying at times. This is my 1st vehicle that has had ABS, so maybe I am still getting used to it. But the system does seem to engage too often for me!
