Noise during acceleration

We have a 01 manual 4runner and have noticed a whirring noise during acceleration, no noise when sitting idle...louder during the lower gears but still there when accelerating at high speeds....any ideas or did this happen you? Mechanics checked it out today, said everything seems fine (heard the noise)

Is the fan-clutch disengaging properly?

Not sure, I'm assuming that would have been something the mechanics would have checked. How can we tell if it isn't disengaging properly?

Seems to me it wouldn't be shifting normally into higher and lower gears and that doesn't seem to be an issue.

fan-clutch is on the radiator cooling fan - nothing to do with driving motion. Is this something that just started?

How many miles on clutch? Does it go away if you depress clutch as you are going down the road? If so its throw-out bearing. If over 100k miles you may need new clutch installed too.

Looks like I made a mistake....our 4runner is an automatic, sorry about the confusion...I couldn't understand why you were mentioning the clutch, then glanced back at my post, yikes Next time I'll post earlier in the evening when I'm not tired....
So any ideas?

I stand by my fan clutch suggestion... If you open the hood and look at the engine cooling (with the engine off and the key not in the ignition) you can see it in the center of the fan. Grab the fan and it should turn almost freely. The fan clutch is a viscous coupler that increases and decreases the "connection" to the pulley based on the temp of the air blowing through the radiator. When those get old the bearings can fail and the fan runs at or near pulley speed all of the time. It puts lots of stress on the pulley, belt and makes lots of 'fan noise' or whirring.

The funny thing is your mechanic said your car is fine but heard the noise. I don't know if they are truly a mechanic.

If the fan clutch didn't turn easy you should replace bearing or belts. Just my 2 cents.
