Noise in the cab...swore I'd never do this.

I swore long ago I would never post a thread asking a question about a noise on any of my vehicles since it's always too hard to describe the sounds. I've read many threads with descriptions from "thunk" to "ping" to "whirrrrr". Please be kind with any replies as I feel stupid enough already just posting this.

I've got a noise that as far as I can tell is coming from the passenger side of the front cab on my 1992 4Runner. It's close to the sound you would get if you held a pen against the blades of a fan as it turns. It's high pitched metallic and only happens at certain vibrations. I think it sounds like metal on metal but my neighbor doesn't agree.

I thought it might be something associated with the transmission (5speed) so I removed the shift boot and rubber boot plate. I drove it around for a day with the boots removed and the noise didn't get any louder or more defined.

I also can't hear it any better with the windows down and driving next to a wall.

It happens during accelleration mostly but will on occasion happen at a sustained speed.

If anyone has dealt with this situation and found a cause I'd appreciate hearing about it. It's driving me nuts. The sound is drowned out by the radio but just knowing it's still there is bugging me.

Did you try adjusting the speed of the heater/cooler fan and seeing if the sound changes?

Yes I tried adjusting the blower motor speed and turning it off. There was no change.

O2 Sensor have a small leak...? Its right under the cab, could fool you and make you think its coming from somewhere else...

From the 2nd gens I've seen/driven, the cross over pipe from the passenger manifold makes a bit of a ticking noise you can slightly hear in the cabin...

Rear muffler section rubbing the frame?... That could create some interesting noises... Mine was touching a while back... Just bent the hanger tabs to space it from the frame.

Take a look at all the plastics in your wheel wells...

I was gonna mention blower motor... But that has been ruled out...

Just a a few ideas that popped into my mind..

Checked those ideas and found nothing out of the norm.

The noise is hard to describe. The best I can come up with is the sound of a metal pin being held against a fan as the blades travel past. It only lasts for a few seconds and is not constant.

I have some time off at the end of the month, I'll investigate it more in depth and hope to find an answer. Thanks for the suggestions.
