Noisy rear diff and finally got the Hella's installed!

I finally found a box with all the parts in it at the third Walmart I tried and got these lights installed on my bull bar. I'm excited about it because it's my first real modification in that I had to drill a hole for the realy to mount and poke wires through the firewall. I think it came out pretty nice...:bluejump:

Now for the issue I'm having...I replaced a really noisy rear diff with one that I was told had about 110k on it. In the last month or so, my "new" rear diff is now making noise. The difference is, my new diff only makes noise from second gear on na donly when my foot is on the pedal. When I'm cruising down a hill or just not giving it any gas, the noise immediately disappears. Any ideas? One mechanic told me that it's a worn ring and pinion...I'm more than a little disappointed that I didn't even get 10k out of the "new" one, but I guess that's how it goes!

Nice work! Looks great. I'm looking forward to the night pics. If you are a photobug at all maybe leave your ISO, shutter, and aperture the same from headlights to hellas?

Only noise in second gear? You sure about that? are you sure the sound is coming from the rear or could it be under you? Hopefully not. Ring and pinion is a lot cheaper than possible transmission work.

If it is the rear diff then pulling the rear third is something you can do. Then you can take it to someone to have the gears set. That'll save you hundreds.

hahah....those are the exact same lights and switch I installed. I also installed my switch in the same exact spot. Funny! I love those lights.

No, I meant that the noise starts around the time the truck shifts to second gear and continues from then on. It gets louder the faster you go. My original diff made noise from the moment you started and even as you were slowing down...when I finally got a look at it, the ring gear was worn but looked ok otherwise. This noise is different since it goes away when you let off the pedal...sorry I didn't explain it right I guess...

I guess Hella put that green switch in some boxes and a red one in others...a few of the incomplete boxes I found on the shelf of my local Walmart(all taped up and for sale at full price!) had red switches. Thats the only little plastic blank that the switch fits on! I think bgmac put his on the center console...that looks cool too...

The lights look great ! I see you have a 98 also . What type of bull bar is that you have ? I noticed every where I look they always list 99-02 . Is there a trick you used to mount that to your 98 ? I have heard they need some fiddling to mount them ? Any tips would be appreciated , thanks

I've been thinking about putting a bull bar on my rig, but will have to wait a while until I save up enough.

Hope your rear diff problem turns out to be an easy and cheap fix.

It's a Hunter Bull Bar that I found while nosing around on on this site...it was $119 shipped. They sell them on Ebay for $99 but $20 shipping so same difference. I actually thought they shipped me one for a 99-02 cause the front sticks out, but I double checked the box and it said 98 on it. The only thing that happened when I installed it was the left side was higher than the right, but I took some advice from some other members and added some metal plates to the higher side and it made it match up pretty good. As far as bolting it on, it was so easy a caveman could do it...:thumb3:

I have the same lights also, but bought the clear poly covers on Amazon, so I can switch them on without having to take the covers off.

I took some night pics last night...took a while since it hasn't stopped raining in GA for like a month! I took a couple and my brother took a couple. I left the hella covers on for the pics cause they were too bright for the camera with them off. I'm using on of the pics for my avatar now!

As far as the noisy diff...I was listening again the other day and now I think that noise might be coming from the front of the truck, not the back. Time to take it in to a professional and have it checked again I guess.

Hey, AK Kilted guy, Do you have any issues with those poly covers warping from the heat of the light? I thought what a hassle it would be to have to pull those covers every time...
