Noisy sunroof

I'm not used to having a sunroof, so maybe this is normal, but when the sunroof is open, that little black bar pops up and makes a ton of noise in the air stream. Is there a way to keep it from popping up or to remove it? When I hold it down with my hand, the noise level is perfect.

I have the same black bar that pops up when I open mine as well, but I can't attest to how noisy it is due to me having a Weathertech sunroof shield/windblocker thing. I would assume it's there to assist in preventing the wind from coming into the cabin through the sunroof or even just to aid in the aerodynamics with an open sunroof.

Redirecting air with a piece of plastic, well, causes noise I guess...

Quick question, is your sunroof really touchy/erratic when operated too?

On each side of the plastic thing, there is a spring. Just slip the springs off and it should stay down.

I don't think mine makes noise... **EDIT- mine does make noise**

No. Mine operates perfectly with no issues other than being noisy. The PO never used the sunroof so it's in perfect condition. Same with the rear window too. Love being able to lower that rear window!

The engineers didn't just put that in there for kicks you know... although slightly noisy it may be, it keeps the air that's coming into the truck fairly laminar (ie not buffeting like crazy). My favorite way to drive in the 4Runner, even on the highway, is with the sunroof open and rear glass about half open. The flow of fresh air through the cabin is unreal, and I am reminded every time why I exactly own a 4Runner :clap2:

I've not tried it with the rear window open. I just know that with only the sunroof open, if I reach up and pull that plastic bar down, the wind noise is nearly eliminated and I still get a nice breeze.

I'll try it with the window down though!

I should have added to my original post, that the noise is mainly at highway speeds and not while cruising around town.

Actually, mine does make noise. I just never noticed it because I almost always have the side windows down when the sunroof is open.

When I pull the black plastic thing down, there is the "helicopter noise".
