Non-rock crawling suspension/tire combo

Whoa. That used parts theory is scary. I'm seriously considering that kit...but not if the components are used! We need to find out.

Good thread!

I am considering all of the same choices but I believe I am going to go with the OME Toytec Kit with assembly and top plates and the diff drop kit.

My current shocks and coils are shot and need to replace so might as well do a small lift. Plus I can get this without the shipping, Toytec is just right up the road from me. It looks like a basic kits that requires the least amount of change. All parts are new and you will get a nice clean look to your ride. I am by no means turning my runner into a rock crawler but I don't like driving a mall crawler either. I will do trails and maybe more but I still want the clearance. This way I don't have to worry about the brake lines as much or do the panhard bar either if I don't want to.

Good call, that was a typo. The "Complete OME Kit" has the shorter OME shocks and you wont need the extended brake lines. The "Toytec Ultimate Kit" has the longer shocks and needs the brake lines or bend the bracket. (I will edit my post so it won't confuse future readers).

I thought the Complete OME Kit has the longer shocks as well. When I spoke to a rep at Toytec they said they use the extended Nitro Charges (part no 60027) for the kit. Am I mistaken?

You're not mistaken, they are longer than stock. But not as long as the Bilsteins that come with the SS 1.2 or (as I was told) the NGTR-4Rs that come with the Ultimate kit.

Just confirmed with Steve @ Sonoran Steel. The coils in the SS3.0 system are BRAND NEW, GENUINE TOYOTA.

Just thought I would clear that up.

So, new springs shouldn't sag for a good while. And if they do begin to sag, inner-coil air bags are an option.

Did you happen to ask him why his website says they are "from a vehicle made in Japan with a 3.4 V6, 4WD & 16" wheels"? Doesn't that suggest they are used? That just doesn't make sense to me. I have never bought a new part that stated it came from another vehicle.?? Shouldn't they come from the factory and be for a particular vehicle? Probably just a typo, but confusing.

I did mention the web site wasn't clear. I think the reason he put that on the web site was to clarify that the coils are from the 99-spec model.

Anyway, I'll take his word that they are indeed brand new. He has been nothing but straightforward about every other question I've had, not to mention very quick to respond.

Edit: I'm sure there are people with the system 3.0 on this site who could back this up. It'd be pretty obvious if the coils were used.

I'm sure what he said is true. Just a little confusing how it's worded on the site. Thanks for clearing that up tho!

Thanks for infor Brian2Sun! I see why the SS is a step above the OME.

I am of the opinion that you should build a little bit more than you need. example, the OP wants a little bit of a functional lift, but over time, parts wear and sag. So a 2" lift over a few years will droop to a one inch lift.
Adding a beefier coil and shock combo to the back will be the best option if you haul gear in your rig, or help people move, go camping....
Just saying dont under sell your self on parts to save money or because you may not need it now. You may need it later.

You're welcome! I agree the SS 1.2 is a step above the OME because of what is all included in it, but I also believe that the OME setup is 95% as good but for about 55% of the price. Also, for hauling around a lot of weight or towing a trailer, I fully believe the OME heavy (891s) coils to be superior for that. I have ~250 lbs of gear and tools in the back, as well as the CBI rear bumper w/ spare tire, gas can, and hi-lift (~300 lbs.). Considering the extra 550 lbs or so I carry around, the 891s hold up better than LC coils for my purposes.

The advantage of the LC coils is they flex more and easier and also ride smoother (and give you an inch or 2 more lift).

Another thing worth mentioning (I think) is that I run without sway bars for improved suspension travel and running a stiffer coil helps reduce the extra body roll you get with removing the sway bars. I haven't felt LCs without sway bars, but I could only imagine it would be pretty slinky.

I agree. I've been running around for almost a year with heavy coils and not much weight while waiting to get everything to complete my build. It was too stiff during that whole time, but I got the heavies anticipating the final outcome. Now that I have everything on there, I dfinitely made the right choice because it rides perfect now.

So I feel we have gotten some good info on the kits here (at least stuff I havn't found anywhere else), but what if I wanted to do the cheapest decent job. How do you make sure you are getting a good balanced set without buying a kit or buying stock?

And how cheaply can you do this?

Ok, so dumb request because I know I have seen pics on here, but I can't find them now...

Anyone got pics of the OME lift kit with and without the spacer (obviously not the same vehicle, just looking for pics of both)? Do I really need the spacer, or is the rake without it not so bad? Will the front coils sag more than the rears?

Nelsonmd, I just found this thread as you referenced it in another one. I too am looking for a smaller lift that doesnt sacrifice on road drivability and functionality for what I use my runner for. Once out of school this semester, Ill be back in the Rocky Mountains. Sounds like a we use our 4runners for similar stuff. I do a lot of mountain biking/hiking/camping/skiing . . . basically everything involved with living in the mountains.

I'm considering getting the toytec ultimate lift with OME 906 medium coils for the rear. The website claims a ~2" rear lift with this coil, which is exactly what Im looking for. I like the look of a lift, and want the off road capability it provides, but I think 3" or more would be overkill for me. Considering mine is my daily driver, not a rock crawler. Then of course the front is adjustable, so I could set it at 1 1/2" to 2", depending on how the rear end sits. And if I ever wanted more lift I could just throw a spacer in the back, and adjust the front. Also, with the front adjusted to sit lower, you take some tension off the front coils, which would soften the ride a little. This is important to me, cause I dont plan on adding a wench/bumper, or any other weight at the moment. So Im thinking this would be a good option for me.

Did you end up lifting yours? If so, which system did you go with, and how does it ride?

Increadible Thread!

:nicethread:
Just want to say this thread is awesome! Answered so many questions as I also 4Wheel occasionally with my daily driver. So which one are you gonna go with Nelsonmd? Also which tires are you thinking about?

Hehe, I still don't really know for sure. My plan is to get the OME kit when spring rolls around, but I might start looking for some Tundra TRD coils while I wait since people speak well of them and I might be able to get them cheaper. I have decided that I don't need or want 3" of lift due to not rock crawling, and not wanting to stress my CV's any more than stock. I am shooting for about 2", probably will do the diff drop on that even though it isn't necessary.

As far as tires, I am still in the market. I just picked up a set of used firestone destination LE's with 70% tread. I am trolling for a used set of AT's until I find a deal on some new ones that impresses me.

I feel like I have been debating this forever, but patience is important, and I need to watch my expenses, so patience really is the name of the game.

Be careful with your tires, man. You don't want to end up on top of the guard rail again.

...yeah... that was with the new tires...

I hate to think what that drive would have been like with the old tires. The new ones are definitely better, but not quite everything I'd hoped and dreamed. That guardrail thing was my fault mostly, I should have just gone slower and stayed in 4WD. I wish I could afford new tires right now.

For what it's worth...

I just contacted a rep at Toytec and told them what I'm looking for for my Runner, a truck that I use for exactly the same things that Nelsonmd does. Plus, I want to add 31" diameter tires. The rep said the following:

"It sounds like your best option would be the OME Full Suspension kit. I would recommend getting the 881 front coils and the 906 rear coils for a level truck. Those springs are designed to lift the 4Runner 2 inches front and rear. Your lift height may vary if your stock springs are worn out. If you would like to rear to be higher, I would recommend the 880 coils for the front and the 906 for the rear. That will be 1.5 inch lift in the front and 2 inches in the rear. That is the lowest lift height we offer."

All I'm after is 2 inches in the rear and 1.5 in the front. Does anyone have anything to add to this advice? Sounds pretty straightforward to me, I don't think I need any extra parts.

I'll also throw my two cents in and say that this thread is awesome! It confirmed some of my ideas. Sounds like a few of us use our runners in the same way and want a modest lift - DD's, hunting, camping, hiking, etc. My plan is to do either 880's or 881's in front and 906's in the rear. With new OME shocks. No plans for heavy-duty bumpers, winches etc. After reading this forum for about 100 hours, I think that's the best route for my use. And mine is a 2wd, so as long as a throw on a Detroit Trutrac I should be good for whatever I'll come across.

Maybe try new replacement springs and then a spacer lift so you won't have to worry about spacers wearing on the old springs. OME are gonna be stiff for most of the people looking for this setup....well so I've noticed around the forum. The rear OME springs won't be horrible but I'm a believer in staying progressive up front. Or get the 2002-2006 Tundra TRD spring/shock swap. That will give You 2" oflift as well. Assuming You can find a pair. Links around the forum where You can order them.

If I were to go OME all around it would be 880's, and a spacer later if I felt I needed more lift up front.
