Noob here...just picked up my first Yota

Been a Jeep guy for awhile but I just scored a very clean '95 4Runner 4WD 3.0/Auto 152k miles for $1200! Everything works, a/c, rear window, cd changer, etc...this thing must have been well taken care of. Has a set of decent tread Toyo Open Country a/t 31x10.50 tires as well. The reason I got it so cheap is it has 2 issues, one is an oil leak, looks like its the valve cover gasket, luckily its only leaking from the side not under the intake manifold...it leaks a fair amount and does smoke a bit on the exhaust manifold, but thats an easy fix. The other issue is a miss/hesitation at idle and until around 2200 rpm, both in neutral and under load, engine seems to run fine (as fast and the 3.0 can go lol) after that. The guy said he changed the plugs, rotors, cap, and wires recently and it still has the problem. He said he thinks it may be a vacuum leak? Any other ideas? Im thinking a throttle position sensor maybe? Other sensor? Im not all too familiar with these Toyotas. Thanks, cant wait to drive this thing

Yeah give it a good TPS check with the FSM. Check the "Stickies" at the top of the thread page for info on finding FSMs. Also take a look at the all the intake boots. The 3.0 is finicky when it comes to vacuum/air leaks.

You might consider pulling the intake, and changing out the following:
1) valve cover gaskets (of course)
2) intake gaskets
3) throttle body gasket and clean TB
4) pcv
5) injector o-rings and housing seals
6) coolant temp sensor(if it's never been done, you have access with intake off)
You might change the fuel filter if it has not been done and take some pressure readings. The ethanol in the gas has been doing a number on the fuel systems in these trucks(ie dries out rubber seals/o-rings, etc....).

I would not trust the guy who said he changed the plugs and wires. I would make sure it has OEM Denso wires (NOT trhe cheapy parts store wires) and NGK plugs.

Thanks guys...looks like ive got some troubleshooting to do, wish I had a spare tps that was known good so I could just plug it in and see if it solves the problem, I hate electrical and vacuum gremlins!

2nd that. Denso(see pic) makes some quality parts, along with NGK. That truck should get a good once over.

This might be an easier fix than I thought, picked up the truck after work today, filled it up with fresh gas, drove it home and popped the hood, found a loose hose clamp on the intake plastic tubing, tightened that up, unhooked the battery to reset the computer, and now it idles smoother and doesn't hesitate at all after 1500 rpm or so, its running a lot better than when I first test drove it...I'm thinking this truck sat awhile before I bought it...gonna check what kind of plugs and wires he put in tomorrow and I'm gonna clean the maf sensor, have my electrician buddy come over and check out my tps and search for vacuum leaks...thanks for all the help
