can someone please tell me what adjusting the "gain" on your amplifier does. my amp can with two knobs, one is the bass eq, and the other is the "gain". what does it do?

the guys where i went did the same thing too! they even left an outkast cd in my cd player. i guess they think my music doesn't hit hard enough (i listen to trance/progressive, which sounds better with tighter bass).

the guys at the shop charged me 125 to install the amp and sub to my unit. they said that with the alpine amp i bought (i forgot what feature they said it has...i think it was speaker level inputs) i didn't need rca converters and rca's, so it was a real easy install. with rca converter and rca's it would've been 175. here's the amp i bought:

it fits conveniently under the passenger seat.

nothing big, just enough to provide me with the bass i need. for one ten inch sub, the kicker comp hits well. i will post pics of my install later.

Did you use the amp exclusively for the sub?
I see that's a 2 channel amp so even with a 6 speaker system I know you aren't powering something.
I too have a Scion HU and added Polk Audio DB series speakers front & rear but when I turn up the bass it's not clean and seems to break up. I can't set it over zero with some CD's at more than 1/4 volume. Even still it sounds terrific when I adjust to where it sounds clean.

yea i bridged the amp for only the sub. i turned the gain almost all the way down, and the bass is tight.

Honestly, I prefer tight bass when it comes to any type of music. 
: I'm a big electronica fan, too (I use 'electronica' as a broad term that includes dance, techno, club, trance, etc.).
We also have similar setups...I have a bass-only, 2-channel Xtant paired with twin 10" MTXs. The rest of the speakers aren't currently amplified, but I'll work on that this Christmas.

I have exactly the same problem with my 12" MTX sub, although RAP sounds OKish, but when I put some trance or house (which I listen most of the time) it sounds just too terrible...gain is turned down almost to nothing, but I still can get clean bass. I have just talked to my friend, he said that it happens because your deck does not devide audio signal into separate frequency, i.e Hi, Mid, Low and thus it feeds all of them into sub. I have 1200 w amp and even having gain turned down to nothing, I cant get what I need. What he suggested to do was to install a couple of crossovers to divide the signal, however, Im not sure and need someones expert opinion on that one.

my bass sounds ok rite now...i'm hoping that the scion head unit will do more justice. with crossovers, you're sending jus the low frequencies to the sub right? don't some amps have that function built in? i wonder if mine does....

Crossovers do seperate the frequencies and send them to the correct driver.
On my 2004 Sport w/6 speakers Toyota has a crossover at the tweeter mounted high in the front doors. This is to protect it from being blown when volume is increased and to help get more mid/high in the front seats due to the 6x9's in the doors.
When I changed the stock 6x9's to the Polk 3 way DB690's with built in crossovers you could clearly hear the difference in frequency seperation.
BTW, I left the stock mid/tweeter in the top of the doors.
