Noobie Question - Timing Chain or Belt (1998 T4R SR5 3.4 V6)?

Hi,

I am noobie on this forum and this is my first post. I have tried searching but received multiple info and getting confused.

I just purchased a 1998 T4R SR5 3.4 V6. Could somebody please confirm if this engine has timing chain or belt? Thanks in advance.

Also, any suggestions on how to modify my DD. No off-roading. Future plans are clear parking and corner lights and 265/75x16 tires.

It's a belt. Fortunately it's also a non-interference engine which means if the belt breaks, pistons don't slap into valves and destroy the engine. The belts routinely go 100k + miles with no problem.

Thanks for the quick response. I just got it yesterday and has 143k miles. Called my mechanic and I was told it has a chain but when searching, I found mixed information.

Where can I find the sticker that has the note when the timing belt was replaced? The owner cant remember when it was replaced. Thanks.

I've heard that most shops will write the mileage onto the upper engine cover (the black plastic cover with 3400 on it). If you can't find any markings and there is no documentation of it being changed, I would assume it hasn't been. If you know the previous owner used a particular dealership then you can have that dealership check to see if the service was performed.
