Hey Guys,
just installed my CB.
Never used one before,..
Just wondering, what channels are out there for just chattin? The airways have been pretty quiet where I live, in Sonoma, ..

Think it is Channel 19 that truckers use. Other then that just need a buddy with one and coordinate the channel that you want to talk on.

Or just say hello and see if anyone responds. Remember CB's range is not that good. So someone would need to be close to you.

For comparison, on my 2 meter HAM I was in San Mateo and using the Mt. Diablo repeater was chatting with someone in Auburn CA. A good 120 plus miles.

The CB channels are usually pretty busy anywhere.
It's possible your antenna is not wired correctly, an open or short could result in silence.
If you know someone with a VSWR you can check your antenna.
Your range under good conditions may only be 10-15 miles or so, so if you are out in the middle of nowhere that would be a factor too.

Depending on your antenna, I have found that the CB band can be pretty quiet in California. Ch 19 is the typically nation-wide highway channel, but for some reason in the Bay Area (and maybe elsewhere in California) Ch 17 is used a lot also. And Ch 16 is typically to go-to band for off-roading (4x4).

On a good day you should be able to hear the crazy guy on Ch 6. He is out of somewhere in the South (maybe Georgia) and must be using a super powered illegal amp. I always seem to find him in when I'm flipping through the channels and the 11m band is open.
