Not Another Supercharger Question!!

So I have read many a post about superchargers, so when an opportunity came along to get one I snagged it up. Now originally I had mad dillusions of screamin 4 wheel burnouts and corvett dusting boost!! But of course tell me what is the reality of installing one? Where have you noticed the benifits( towing strumff?). And why take it back off. Will it affect any moderate wheeling/boonie crashin?

the supercharger will eventually destroy your engine from running to lean make sure you buy the urd 7th injector kit and a urd map ecu2

Not sure if that is entirely true. If it were, Toyota would not have made that as a dealer installed option.

Not entirely true you still could use an AFC but your better off with using the new ecu and 7th injector.

The 3.4 is made for forced induction it shouldn't destroy the engine.

The "Z" in the engine code 5VZ-FE stands for forced induction in Toyota engines.

If it's in the first group, it's not factory installed but was designed and built for forced induction.

If it's in the second group, it's factory supercharged. For factory turbocharged, the letter "T" is used in lieu of the letter "Z".
examples:
4A-GZE is an A-series engine with DOHC sport cam angle (G), supercharger (Z), and EFI (E). 2L-T is a L-series engine with turbocharger (T). 1KZ-TE is a KZ-series engine with turbo (T) and EFI (E). 1KD-FTV is a KD-series engine with multi-valve (F), variable nozzle turbo (TV).

Well thanks for rattling off those statistics for me but it has nothing to do with what Im talking about. The 5VZ-FE is a very well built motor for forced induction... but the fuel system isnt. Thats what the 7th injector kit is for. A supercharger sucks in air like a massive vacuum then blasts it into your cylinders so if theres more air in your cylinders then you're obviously gonna need more fuel and the the 4runners fuel system cannot pump enough fuel to balance the air/fuel mixture needed for the engine to run properly which is call running lean and can over time damage the engine.

A fuel system upgrade is nice but not mandatory. I ran a cooler tstat and iridium plugs in mine and towed my camp trailer to oregon and back with 0 problems. If ya dont want your s/c, I would be more than happy to take it off your hands since I had to sell mine. lol I miss the boost

I understand what your talking about but still, the 3.4 came from the factory made to handle the sc and those engines never came from the factory with the 7th injector. I don't mean to get into an argument with ya.:) just giving my 2 cents.

So how many of you have a s/c and what are it's juicy's??

are you serious? an additional 100hp and 75 lbs.ft. So that puts the 4runner at 240hp and 295 lbs.ft. as opposed to 140hp and 220 lbs.ft. Going from 0-60 in 9 seconds to 0-60 in 7 seconds. And the 4runners engine (5VZ-FE) is very well built for it. Its a solid iron block that can withstand gobs of boost but the fuel system, no matter what anyone says, needs to be upgraded. The stock fuel injectors can only pass 238cc of fuel and the stock fuel pump can only pump 53psi of fuel. For the engine to not run lean with the supercharger you injectors need to be able to pass about 300cc and the pump about 65psi which will also require you to do something to your ECU to be able to tell the fuel system to pump that much fuel. For those of you with a supercharger that havent upraded your fuel system, I want you to try something out. Next time your accelerating onto a highway, accelerate at WOT (wide open throttle) and once you hit about 60 (still WOT) let off the gas just a little bit, and I 100% guarantee that it will actually accelerate faster than at WOT.
If no one wants to listen to me thats fine, its not my grave that you're digging. I'm just tryin to give you all a heads up.
 
So I see that fuel delivery is a problem, so what did toyota do to solve this problem on thier factory equipped s/c trucks? And back to my original post, Basicaly I want to build a street creeper w/mild wheeling/boonie crashin capability, how will the s/c affect my off road capability?
 
They dont add 100 hp by themselves. They add 75 hp by themselves. They more tuning and extra fuel items you add will increase the hp's. It doesnt sound like you want to build a drag racer so the 75 hp will be more than enough for you

I have done this and no, it wasnt accelerating better than at WOT. Like I said before , a fuel system upgrade is a nice thing to have, just isnt mandatory like alot of people try to tell you. I know several people who have s/c's that have no upgrades that have never had any problems and they are definately not easy on their trucks as far as driving them goes
 
I have to agree with Matt here. Each truck seems to be different but they definitely run lean with just the S/C. I have also never heard that the 3.4 was "designed for boost". If that were the case, they would have beefed up the fueling. If you don't do the fuel mods do yourself a HUGE favor and at least get a Wideband A/F gauge. To keep an eye on things, would be cheap insurance. My experience with this when I had an S/C on my white 98 which didn't have fuel mods. At sea level the truck ran perfectly fine. One thing you should also know is that you HAVE to run 93 and always keep a can of octane booster in the back incase you get some bad gas. If you get some bad gas, chances are it will ping like crazy while in boost. Another thing I experienced was that the truck ran great at sea level but my parents lived up in the mountains and the minute I started heading up the steep stuff I couldn't even begin to bring it into boost without it pinging badly. If you can ever hear the engine ping, its not a good thing. When coming back down to sea level it went back to running fine. You get a decent power gain with the fuel mods b/c you can run more boost as well as have a piece of mind your not ruining your engine.
 
It wont effect your emissions. It is carb legal and comes with the carb sticker for emissions. Also I think they only work with the 00-01 and up 3.4's. At least that is the applications I have only seen. I havent seen them available for the years under that. I may be wrong tho.
