Not Happy With CH4x4 Switch, Should Have Gone with AOB

Installed my rear camera dongle today and thought I would save $8 by using the cheaper CH4x4 Toyota Small Push Series switch instead of paying $28 for an AOB Switch.

The switch looks very similar to the stock ones, but when you mount the switch in your trim panel until the clips grab, the travel of the switch gets blocked and push button no longer operates. I ended up having to wrap electrical tape around the housing and pressure fit the switch into the mounting hole and leave some of the housing sticking out. It seems to work as long as I don't push too hard, but the switch sticks out more than the others and looks odd.

I will call CH4x4 tomorrow to see if they are aware of this issue.

Personally I have not found the quality of the AOB to be all that impressive. I have one that doesn't light up when activated, another that sticks, the other two are ok but occasionally stick as well.

AOB is the best quality I have sourced so far.
I truly wish Toyota would make some switches we could use for our accessories.
If anyone has any info, that would be fantastic.

I have not used the ch4x4 switches so I cannot comment on them. I will say that I do not think the quality of the AOB switches is too great. I have three and all three of them I had to wrap with electrical tape because the casing will not stay together on its own.

I have tried to source higher quality switches but did not have any luck. I got two samples from China, one was complete shite and the other was pretty much the same as AOB. I'm headed to Japan in the summer, I am hoping to look for some items when I'm there, I'll add these switches to my list.

I have issues with my AOB switches actually staying activated. It take a lot of pressure to get it to stay on instead of acting like a momentary switch. Maybe I got some from a bad batch.

I have no personal experience, but I recall members being satisfied with OTRATTW switches..

Wrap some electrical tape around the bottom where the wiring harness plugs in. I had the same issues with mine and this fixed it.

Toyota buys OEM switches from somewhere. Maybe someone could find the supplier that makes them, and order more to the same specs?

the OTRATTW switches are decent, no issues with the 6 on my rig so far, but the are not even remotely close in style to the OEM toyota ones

Do these fit the knock outs in our 2010-16 4Runners...?

Hi Mr saker,

That's a really good question! I'll be willing to bet that, that's not the same size as the ones we order from AOB and slee off-road; even the switches that fit the FJC won't fit the 4Runner! ...and these cost almost double ($44) what we pay for AOB ($28) so what would be the incentive... "Just curious."

Sounds like face plate isn't depressing internal switch far enough down to engage/disengage, got a little experience here :eyebrows:

Had two Slee switches that did the same thing, fix is to "message" face plate. Notice tabs on back side of face plate (sorry for crappy pictures), while engaging and releasing switch you will see where they contact with switch housing, shaving they down 1/16" will allow switch to be depressed a little further for a better latch/unlatching.



and/or shave front edge of board only where face plate tabs come in contact. A razor knife makes quick work of it.

AOB & Slee are not the highest quality switches, but they fit perfectly and have a great selection of symbols to choose from for that custom look. My only complaint is LED output through laser etching is not uniformed, but hey, that's my OCD speaking.............:lalala:

Great solution and worth trying if one has this problem!
You could also shave the backside of the faceplate on the cover as well....could be bottoming out when switch assembly is installed in the dash.

That's exactly correct! That switch even looks a wee bit longer than the AOB/slee Toyota style switches that I've been using! The switch that fits the FJC will also fit some Camerys, Corollas and Avalon; different than gen 5 4Runner... ask me how I know lol!

As far as the quality of the slee push-buttons, I've had trouble with them binding or sticking in the winter time @20 deg and below; it may take a few tries to get it to latch in the ON position...it's like the switch body contracts, causing the moving shaft to bind. Once the truck gets warmed-up enough then it'll work perfectly!
