Not slowing down when downshifting?

hello all,

i just recently purchased a 2006 SE 4runner and i LOVE it so far. however, the other day when i was coming down from a pretty steep hill, i down shifted into a lower gear to slow down, but nothing happend. i went from D to 4, then to 3, then to 2 and my car wasn't slowing down as much as i expected it to--i still had to ride the brakes all the way down. it wasn't until i hit L when the car really slowed down.

now is this a common thing with the new 4runners, or is there a problem with my gear settings?

thanks!

The 4Runner has a lot of mass... Downshifting will help slow you down on a small incline, but it's not gonna do much down a significant grade. Anything more than 5-6% of a grade at lower speeds and you're not going to slow down much unless you get into 1st or 2nd gear.

have you tried shifting up? to see if it almost redlining? i'm not familiar with the 2006 so i'm not perfectly sure.
