Not sure what this is...

I was underneath the truck today and noticed this. It flops all around and makes a bit of a racket when I grab it. I'm thinking maybe a broken transfer case mount but not sure. I couldn't find a pic of a similar one on here.

If it is, how imperative is this to be fixed? Would engaging the 4wd while the mount is broken result in any damage? Or can I focus on other things for while?

It's a dampener. To help reduce felt vibrations and noise. If it's flopping around though it may be broken. Mine is pretty solid and doesn't "flop" at all.

Ok thanks. I'll look up a replacement as it is definitely broken and really not connected to anything; just sitting in there rattling/flopping around.

Pulled mine off years ago and would have to nit-pick to say there's a difference. It's pretty slight. Oddly, when you take it off (to replace or remove) oil comes out of one of the bolt holes. Not super-fast, just so you know it happens.

I am not so sure it needs to be replaced. You may just be able to unbolt it and remove it. If it broken now, then its probably not dampening too well anyway. Esepecially if you have a lifted rig with bigger tires that sees some offroad time. I dont know for sure though, you may want to search a bit more and see if others have just removed it. I keep looking at the one under my modded t4r, and it just looks like a place to get hung up on a rock to me :)

Interesting. I'll have to remember that if I decide to replace it.

I'm not so sure I'm going to do anything with it right now. From what I've read so far, it may cost around $350 to replace. I can think of a lot more useful and interesting things to spend $350 on than that. Hell, I wouldnt have even known it was broken had I not been underneath the truck inspecting things. I think perhaps I'll wait until a 4Runner shows up at a junk yard around here and I'll go pull it from there for cheap.

And yeah, it does seem to just kind of hang out there waiting to caught on something.
