Joe, this is Charles buddy. This is the crew that I usually meet up with for trailrides that I was referring too. Great group.

Seems like there is always 2-4 of us headed out from VB/757 area. It's a haul, but well worth getting out of here and into the woods for some much needed space.

Sorry for the late reply, been pretty busy up here in Newport. We have classes starting up on the 11th but I should be able to make the run. I'll know more when I get back home in two weeks.

I agree with Greg, if we do Flagpole I'd like to run it backwards from our usual route just to change it up. If we could get a good ridge run or something different I'd like that as well.

The only off road experience I have is with my mountain bike. With that said, I'm a total newb at four wheeling and off roading. I've owned a 3rd Gen, but it was 2WD and I've always wanted a 4WD. I finally pulled the trigger and traded in the 3rd Gen for a used 5th Gen LE and loving it. This is my first 4WD and really want to learn off road basics. If I knew of a legal place to do that here in the VaBch area, I would have done it by now.

Its funny that you mention mountain biking as your offroad experience. I had the same background before I started offroading in a vehicle and I must say that you are WAY ahead of the game compared to other fields of experience. [MENTION=126369]Chuch[/MENTION] can comment on this because I know hes a big mountain biker too. You've already got loads of experience with selecting the best line. Understanding the careful balance between torque input and its effect on traction in a myriad of environments will also serve you well out in 4 wheel drive realm.

For newbies, this is a great run. My first wheeling experience was Peters Mill and Flagpole knob when my 06 only had larger tires (265/70/17). Never had an issue and never once felt unsafe. The guys on this forum know their stuff and there are no judgements on the trails. Built rigs that can get over anything stop and help guide newbies through "easy" paths. Nobody passes judgement if you play it safe and take the easy lines. We're all about having fun and helping each other, not showing off who has the best setup or who can do the most. Well, there may be a little of that but not in the way that makes anyone with a less built rig feel inadequate. That said, the biggest risk of wheeling with a stock rig is that your wallet will probably hurt in the weeks after the trip. I don't think I've gone on a wheeling trip without spending the next couple weeks looking into new upgrades I saw on someone else's truck or ones that I feel would have allowed me to do more.

Quick GWNF trip 12/12

FYI, since its sunny and 70 outside in December, I'm making a quick spur of the moment trip to the GWNF this Saturday for a full day of wheeling. Thusfar its me and one other built Taco. Will probably leave a meeting spot in Harrisonburg mid-morning and head up if anyone wants to join. Let me know and we can coordinate further.

As a fellow mountain biker, I'd say you're spot on about picking lines and gaining an understanding about torque and traction. I'm fairly new to off-roading so I hope the experience carries though to the world of the internal combustion engine. :biggrin2:

Wow - The Limiteds are running 20's? I knew they looked big...

If you've got BFG KO2s you will be fine. BFG makes an excellent tire and they have triple ply sidewalls for added strength. You may FEEL more on the trail, but these trails are not intense so you will be fine. I run 15psi in my KO2s on the dirt because it makes the ride more comfortable (it also greatly increases the contact patch of the tire and provides extra grip). I would be interested to see your wheels/tires at a decreased pressure setting.

You can make the call when you get to the roundup. I don't think you will have any issues with your Limited. It IS a 4Runner after all.

Hey sovat4r, when I saw your poste I was so bummed that I couldn't make it. I had a ton of stuff to catch up on this weekend. Still working actually. How did things go?

I was hoping to get more of a response from the group, but I do understand that it will be January and not everybody is crazy about being outside in 30 degree weather. I wanted to see if you had a preference on the two weekends. We could start there and plan that day for a GWNF excursion and then we could plan a secondary on the other weekend. What do you think?

I met a guy up here in RI that just moved to Chesapeake from Lamoore,CA. He has a TJ and has ran a lot of trails out west and is interested in running with us. He still needs to get checked in to his new command but is fairly sure he and his family can make it.

Drove a bit on Long Run road today....the terrain was starting to get interesting (muddy moguls) when I had to turn around (I had a late start). Seems like you can drive all the way to West Virginia and there are camping spots along the way. I want to head back for sure and make West Virginia my objective )
