Now I am REALLY wondering about my V8

I noticed a difference in acceleration when I swapped tires from stock (P265/65-17) to AT (LT265/70-17). It takes a lot of power to overcome the extra rotational inertia from heavier tires. This should be especially apparent with 33s. And I'm sure all the additional weight from your skids, sliders and bumper (+500lb?) don't help either.

Where are you in Phoenix Staceman? Ive got a 04 and live in mesa. Not exactly 1 to 1 but if your on the east side we could meet up if you would like. Im in class form 7-9am on Dobson but other than that Im free.

Honestly it just be the gearing. I recall prior to putting all terrain tires, the 4Runner would haul ass. Now with bigger tires and gear, it's sluggish but I'm sure if you regeared to 4.56 you'd haul once again.

Question....Don't these 4runners learn your driving styles/habits and adjust tranny shift speeds and such to that style? Mine does the same, but I am easy and rarely ever get on it so it my belief is that it tends to shift differently and slower. When I do get on it it will take a second for it to downshift, but when it does it does launch and have good power. . . . and thats the '04 V8. If true OP, could your 4runner normally be riven easily without always quickly getting on and off the throttle? I believe you can do a reset and it will relearn your habits, but others would know better than me.

+1 for the sluggish-ness/hesitation.
I'll be curious how this thread evolves. My thoughts centered on either a seized caliper, or something with the electronic throttle. It seems to me the sluggish hit the gas wait a beat or two for the power to come on thing happened after a service at the dealer and a flash of the ecu.

Something must be up with your 4Runner, mine with 106k feels plenty strong. If you are really concerned you could go find an AWD dyno, I think that the 05-09 4.7's put down low 200's to the wheels.

After reading this thread, I am going to clean the throttle body though just to be sure that it's making all the ponies it should.

I wouldn't expect your 4runners to slow down with mileage.

I got mine with about 180k and I'm now pushing 210k. It's one of the faster rigs I've driven, almost on par with my Trans Am for seat of the pants power.

im at 130k and it hasnt felt any different from when i first bought it. Its definitely not fast by any means but nor is it slow.

Thanks for the offer Velonici!
I live in Surprise, work DownTown Phoenix. Perhaps meet 1/2 way between you and Downtown sometime? I'll buy your lunch!

From what I've read, I think new air filter and plugs. Pull EFI fuse to reset the computer, while I do a total clean of the throttle body and clean the MAF sensor, plug the fuse back in, and drive like a bat out of hell for a few days.

We'll start with that.

Also need to mention,
If I'm cruising along on the freeway and maintaining speed..

Press the gas pedal just a little bit..... nothing.
a little bit more, nothing
a little more again, nothing.
Yet a little more, nothing, still no speed increase.

A little more again, KICKDOWN!, now it's got power...

And all these years, I though that is just how it is....

I know where your coming from Bonyfattony.

I know what you mean when I ran 33" tires on my 85, with stock 4.10s.
horrible.
4.88s made that all better,

But there was really no change taking this rig from stock 31" tires to 33" tires.
I was expecting more of a power loss, but it was minimal to say the least. Not much more of a slug as it was before the tire swap....

The Tundra is rear wheel drive, way less weight in the rear due to the pickup bed, and probably the gear ratio. My GX has the same V8 as your 4runner and its definitely no slouch on the road when I gun it.

No problem man. Just let me know. My daughter flys in on the 16th and we normally go to the Wildlife Zoo at some point. So if you would like (and dont mind waiting a bit) we could meet up when I'm out that way since its just south of you. Or we could meet up before then. Up to you. Like I said Im in class Monday - Thursday from 7-9am and dont work (Hurray GI Bill) so really anytime after that.

That would be perfect.
Let me tune/clean her up over the weekend.

If no change, I'll PM you my phone # so we can drive each others rigs a bit ;-)

No real rush though, whenever you are in the area.

I've been experiencing similar issues. I have a 2007 V8, with about 129K. I've replaced the exhaust manifolds and y-pipe with the Magnaflow OEM replacement parts within the last two months. I threw on a Magnaflow catback while we were at it too (not as droney as I thought). Maintenance is up to date, and the front calipers were replaced about a year ago. Still feels sluggish to me. I ended doing a seafoam treatment on my intake, thinking I might have a little carbon buildup. The truck really didn't smoke as much as I thought it would, and it didn't impact performance what-so-ever. Mileage has been steady, you'd think you'd see a relationship between performance and mileage, if something were amiss. I will say this, my brake pedal is fairly touchy, I wouldn't be surprised if a caliper was stuck.

After reading this thread I went for a ride and noted that my 4 runners hesitation that is annoying me is actually the kick down time. When I'm cruising along and push down on the pedal looking for it to kick down a gear for faster acceleration there is a 1 or 2 second delay between the time I hit the pedal to the time it actually kicks in and starts pulling hard. Once it down shifts the power is there. It's just the delay that's bothering me. I've driven many different vehicles and this is by far the slowest down shift response time I have ever felt.

So it's not just me.....
Glad to hear. (well, actually not)

I would just assume that with the better transmission, newly engineered VVTi, etc, etc, etc. with all the "newer" technology, that it should seem better than the previous generation of the same engine......

The delay could be the computer making decisions on gear selection based on driver input.

You are asking for a transmission to go from 4th or 5th in OD down to 2nd or 3rd on full blast. Its going to take a sec to make those adjustments, no?
