Now I am REALLY wondering about my V8

Mine pushes me into the seat if I start from a stop, but if I'm already rolling it doesn't seem to. I'll have to experiment next time I drive it.

what air filter are you guys running with the hesitation?.. Even brand new stock paper filter vs the pro dry S made a difference in throttle/down shift response time for me. Prior to that change I had similar complaints.

I had a chance to try some things out today.

It seems more sluggish when the engine is cold, but I can't tell for sure.

It really only pushes me into the seat if I start from a stop. If I'm rolling it's doesn't really have the same effect. Maybe it has to do with the torque converter. At a stop the torque converter is slipping, so it's making torque. If you are coasting along it is only lightly loaded, so the engine has to spool up a bit to get the input speed higher than the output speed of the torque converter. The lockup mechanism could make this worse if it unlocks as soon as you hit the gas because in that case the torque converter is not slipping at all, so the engine RPMs need to increase a bit before you feel anything. I think lockup is only active at higher speeds. If it doesn't unlock you should directly feel torque from the engine, but if it thinks it might need to shift soon it will unlock.

The delay could be the computer making decisions on gear selection based on driver input.

You are asking for a transmission to go from 4th or 5th in OD down to 2nd or 3rd on full blast. Its going to take a sec to make those adjustments, no?

I believe this is what people are feeling. The trans downshift one gear at a time and it also detunes the motor for a split second while shifting. The purpose of the detune is to provide a cushier shift feeling during normal driving. Here's a video I took with me making it shift, and you get to hear Gertrude scream a little. lol

P.S. How the hell do you get videos to show up on here instead of the link!??
P.S.S Don't mind the splatter of sweet tea on my steering wheel...I really need to clean my truck!

I guess mine does the exact same thing as yours. Also what kind of exhaust you running, it sounds ****ing mean on your other video in the mud.

EDIT: nvm. straight pipe...may have to chop off my gibson muffler haha.

I had Gibson catback but I took the muffler off and replaced it with straight pipe. It actually isn't bad, and it sounds awesome. Quiet at idle, gets a nice deep tone, and pops slightly if I really get on it. I'm loving it! Been getting a ton of compliments lately. [emoji41]

so when you are on the highway (like 65-75 mph) do you get a lot of drone?

Not really, it's about the same. It's slightly louder in the truck at times, but much less actual drone. You'd think it would be terrible, but it's not. I can still hear my tires, and they're not terribly loud either.

Yeah, that vid is great!

It's not like my 4Runner isn't worth driving, been living with it since new, May of 2007. I just still can't believe what I have been missing this entire time....

The video is not the best to compare to for a few reasons. First, people seem to equate loudness with being fast, but it doesn't work that way. Intake and exhaust mods might get you some tiny performance improvement, but most of the improvement is in the sound. Second, we can't see his foot in the video, so we don't get a sense of the delay between pressing the pedal and the transmission downshifting. That's one of the main things that makes it feel slow.

Also need to mention,
If I'm cruising along on the freeway and maintaining speed..

Press the gas pedal just a little bit..... nothing.
a little bit more, nothing
a little more again, nothing.
Yet a little more, nothing, still no speed increase.

A little more again, KICKDOWN!, now it's got power...

And all these years, I though that is just how it is....

Finally, he's starting from 55mph, which is probably the highest speed where it will still kick down to 2nd (I think it's second). The result is instant power once it's done shifting. If you try the same at, I don't know, maybe 30 or 35 or 40 where 1st is just out of reach but engine speed is only 2,500-3000 in second, it won't be nearly as impressive.

Lol, I'll make a new video. It's impressive no matter where I'm at. Also, remember that I'm running 35's and stick gears. Much better with correct gear ratio.

this is what you do. MAF sensor, fuel filter/pump, spark wires/plugs, trans. fluid, diff. fluid, check throttle cable tension, brake cable tension(might me to tight), clean throttle body, and tune to your desire. plus all cars should have the cat replaced or cleaned(only professionally-you don't wanna die) after a certain mileage for the performance aspect.
