Number of keys

I have the smart key and this is my first Toyota with this kind of technology. I am accustomed to getting two master keys and a valet key. Am I correct to assume that there is no valet key on this type of set up, and in fact I'm only suppose to have two smart keys? Oh and what happens if my battery dies in my smart key...how would the 4runner recognize this? Wouldn’t that mean my car would not start because it is push button start?

I got two keys as well. When you valet park, push the button on the side and the metal key will slide out. Lock your glove box with the metal key and give the valet your gray key with the buttons.

Good question on battery dying with the smart key. Our camry has the smart key as well. It is going on 3 years and still on the same battery.

Refer to the owners manual - it has the instructions on how to start the car even if the battery dies in the smart key - if i remember correctly you just hold it right next to the start button and even with no battery power the system will recognize the key.

Do people really use the valet key? I have never used a valet key in my life, then again I dont really have anything of value to steal, well not that would fit into the small glove box at least. Is there any other reason why you would not just give the valet your original key if you did not have anything to lock away? Are people concered with them having access to other keys on the ring as well such as house keys? I have a quick disconnect for that stuff but they still get the original. Just wondering.
 
Because the valet key is built into the smart key. I always just give them the gray key fob and keep my other keys. I don't lock the glove box, because I don't put anything of value in there. I just prefer keeping the rest of my keys. Who knows someone could make a quick copy of your key. If your car had navigation and you program your house into it, the valet now has your key and location to your house.

Chances are it will never happen to you, but I'm sure it has happened to someone.

+1 on keeping my keys on me

I program the intersection of our neighborhood entrance instead of our exact home location. Also, do not keep any paperwork with your home address in your vehicles either.

thats kind of difficult being as most states registration and insurance cards have your home address on them.
