O/D Codes 61, 62, 63 and Steering Leak

Hello,

I'm working on a 1994, 5 speed manual 3.0 4x4.

1. Leaking power steering fluid where the shaft enters the gear box (see photo below). How do I go about replacing the seal where the fluid is coming out? I ordered one (housing gear box seal?) and it's in the mail right now...

2. O/D Codes 61, 62 and 63. Where are the solenoids located and what do I check for that would throw these codes?

3. When the throttle is pushed past a certain point while driving, there is no additional engine response. It feels and sounds like it sort of gives out after about half-way down to the floor. Throttle position sensor? Not sure how to remedy this one either.

Codes 61-63 are codes from an automatic trans, yet you state you have a 5 speed manual. Which is it?

That's why I'm confused too. It is a manual.

What about the other two things? They are more pressing anyhow.

You sure the ecu is correct for that runner? You should not be getting those codes at all unless you have an auto ecu!

As for the seal, take pics of the box when you take it apart, I'm sure someone can show you how to pull the seal out and put the new one in.

Hopefully you don't have to disassemble the whole box to get to that seal, I've seen a tutorial on the little balls that you have to put back in to make it work again (or was that the pump? I forget...)!

Where are you counting the flashes at? The check engine light or the O/D light? Try checking them again, because your vehicle should only be flashing the check engine light, and there is no such codes on that light at all, here's all the ecu is capable of flashing for the check engine light:

Now, if its flashing the O/D light, you have the wrong ecu in that vehicle, or swapped it to a manual, and I can't help ya with that. I'm sure someone else can if that's the case though, as a few here have done the auto to stick swap.

The O/D light in the dash is flashing, and when the paper clip jump in the diagnostics is in it reads: 62,63,64. Check engine flashes constantly and seems to be running fine.

Sounds like you think the previous owner switched the ECU from a vehicle with an automatic transmission? Why would this particular setup be sending those codes though?

Its sending those codes because it doesn't see any of the shift solenoids, since you don't have an automatic transmission.

I can't tell you if the automatic ecu is changing the way the engine runs or not, I would think that it is confused on speed input and no shift confirmations from the solenoids, but whether or not the ecu screws with the engine's performance due to lack of information from a missing auto transmission, I don't know.

And I am willing to bet that it was an auto vehicle, since you have a bulb in the O/D light on your dash! You could just pull the O/D bulb out of the dash and never have to deal with it again. You won't be able to change the ecu to a manual though, as the 3vze did not come with a 5 speed manual from the factory, as far as I can tell, so you won't find an ecu for a V6 4runner with a 5 speed transmission.

What I would do if I were you, would be to get all the codes off the firewall vin plate, see what exactly came with that vehicle for engine and transmission. That'll confirm whether the truck came with a 4 cylinder that was swapped out for the v6 (and all wiring), or it was a v6 and someone swapped in a 5 speed.
