'O/D' Light Flashing - Help!

The 'O/D Off' light on the instrument panel is flashing. The Manual says "...If the O/D off light is flashing, this indicates a transmission problem. Take your vehicle to the Toyota Dealer immediately".

Any ideas on this folks? What causes it? How serious?

I have a 1990 4Runner with 4WD and an automatic trans. Only 37,000 mi on the clock.

Many many moons ago, I had a '90 4x4 pickup with the V6 and it did the same thing...Didn't make any funny noises or shift differently. I changed the tranny fluid every 15-20k, and was never too hard on the tranny....It seemed normal except for the light flashing....I brought it in, they plugged it in to the computer and said it was nothing...This was a long time ago, but I think they ended up replacing the temp sensor and that resolved the problem.

I know it's an old post but any follow up? Did that fix it? I have the same problem right now and they failed my smog check because of it.

The problem just went away. I never replaced anything. I wish I had a better explanation.

Our has always passed the smog test.
