This past weekend, my 4Runner started making a new noise. But first, a little background...
2002 4Runner w/supercharger (no 7th injector or upgraded fuel system)
Full tank of fuel before heading up to the mountains from Denver (5500 feet)
Engine ran strong, no indications of any issues, no check engine or other lights (except the usual 4WD ones).
I stopped at about 13,000 feet, parked and turned off the engine (key all the way out). Heard what sounded like a generator/helicopter (putt-putt-putt sound). Ended up coming from the fuel filler area, opened the filler door and it became louder. Definitely coming from the filler area...also a strong smell of gasoline. Removed the filler cap...sound kept going and odor remained.
Put the cap back on and restarted the engine.
No check engine light, no performance issue, all normal.
Anyone have any idea what the sound might be indicating? I would think it might have something to do with the fuel evaporative/recovery system...but not sure.
