odd transmission issue on '02

I've got a 2002 4Runner 4WD with an automatic transmission and about 125K miles on it. I've got an odd transmission issue. When the engine/transmission is cold, it will not shift out of first gear. This only happens when the outside air temperature is less than 60 degrees and the engine hasn't warmed up enough to move the needle on the temperature gauge. As soon as that temperature gauge budges up a bit, the transmission shifts out of first gear and otherwise works perfectly. If it's warmer than 60 degrees, I won't see this behavior at all, even when the engine is cold. Right now, life is good. Once Fall arrives here in New England, not so much. I took it to my local Toyota dealer service department, and they said it had thrown a solenoid malfunction code (don't have exact code). They recommended a transmission flush which I went along with. It did solve the problem, but only for about a week. They told me that if it didn't work, my trunk would need a new transmission. I have to admit that I'm mostly clueless and would greatly appreciate any advice you have for me.

Did they replace or clean the filter in the pan or just flush it?
I would hope they replaced or at least cleaned the filter. (it's a fine mesh screen and is cleanable)
If not, it needs to be before they go charging up a transmission on ya.

Ten days and 400 miles after I posted the question here, the transmission completely died. Was driving at highway speed when *poof* no more drive power-- gears will not engage and truck will not move again after it came to a stop. If anyone has recommendations for a transmission shop in the Boston area (preferably metrowest), please let me know.

Wow! That really sucks. My T4R is having trans issues as well. Not the kind you describe, but the kind I fear will also leave me stranded.

Others have warned of flushing the trans with so many miles on it. That's why I've decided to just drain+fill mine (135K).

Best of luck!

Spoke with the owner of a local transmission shop, and his initial thought is my transmission has a blown overdrive bearing. He says he thinks there is a technical service bulletin. He recently did a repair on an 02 Sequoia which has the same A340F transmission and had the same symptoms. I did a quick search and found one possibly related TSB but I don't have access to read it:
EG025-02 DEC 02 A/T/Engine Controls - MIL ON/DTC P0770 (Shift Solenoid)
not sure if this is what he was referring to or not.

Any insight, thoughts, recommendations would be greatly appreciated.

UPDATE-- After many months my 4Runner is back up and running!

That's the good news. the bad news is that it was $$$$.

For anyone in the Boston area, I would recommend Riverside Transmission in Waltham, MA: Transmissions, Hydraulic Services, Electric Diagnosis - Waltham, MA

They basically did a full rebuild for me and replaced the radiator. If anyone's interested, I can post the full list of parts/svcs. The most expensive part was a replacement overdrive bearing. A shift solenoid that had to be replaced was also pretty pricey.

Opted for the rebuild over a donor trans, huh? I'm in a similar boat, but I'm definitely going with a donor trans. Should be around $1200 total.
