Ode to my truck

Ever think about what to get the one you love on a special ocasion? A milestone moment? a right of passage into a new era of being? Well... we've been through a lot together and I think it's time I made the commitment.

I have one statement...

Let's get a donor vehicle together,:girl:

OK, we may need to quit guessing before I end up with 12K tied up in a trail rig... (I'm sure that by the end, that's what it'd cost for me.)

rejuvination:

Found a truck on this forum that I could snag. thanks mudtallica for the hookup

Daylights and description tomorrow.:whoo:

OK, so a litle bit of story is involved. Within the last 3K miles ( 3 weeks ) I have developed an extensive oil leak from what looks like the oil pan seal. It is slightly off to the passenger side and is blowing through 1 quart a week. Only leaks when it is running. I can't pin point the location with multiple cleanings and neither could any of my buddies. Leaning towards an engine pull or at least unbolting the mounts and hoisting it.

Also, I have been running temps of 260 degrees on my tranny in the summer with 2 external coolers and in the winter a comfy 200. Hmmm.... Pulling motor? pulling tranny? sounds like I needed to be on the search

So (as some of you may be familiar) Like Abraham, I searched for a sacrificial lamb only to find an innocent little, lady driven, carbon copy of my current ride right here in the classifieds on tr4.org...

Started tonight by swapping out my busted ass seats for some slick primo grey cloth replacements... before the fedex man came,

*boom*:eyebrows:

Thanks Danthemanx07

OK, so now here I am with two trucks:

99 SR5 auto (302K) oil leak/ klunky tranny

99 SR5 auto (201K) / kitten whisper smooth/ buttery tranny

I am planning to pull the motor/ tranny mated and exchange into the opposite vehicles. My list of things to replace in/on these motors are as follows:

valve seals, (exhaust and intake)
valve cover gasket replace
head gasket (check cylinder wall wear)
compression test (valve and ring wear)
oil pan seal
cam shaft seal
(repair oil leak)
main crank seal

What am I missing while both engines are out?:hungry:
Thanks guys

So as I understand, you are putting the motor and tranny from the donor truck, into your current truck to keep on trucking?

And you are putting your current truck's motor and tranny into the donor truck?

Replace timing belt and water pump while your in there (I'm sure you already know that)

Well that's all I got lol.

You got it brother, while the engine is out, I plan on putting in my front 4:30 diff and unhooking the 4wd until I get home and can pull the rear axle housing to work on my e-locker mod. Swap 'em out.

Try my best to keep two running trucks,

TB was done on mine 40k ago and the donor got all new 16K ago.

Dang, I hate to dissapoint.
This truck travels 250 miles a days. My ass loves IFS.

I don't drive as much as you, but I completely agree. I've never understood why someone whose truck doesn't live in the the trails always push so much for SAS. I drive SFA all the time, I'd much rather have IFS if I wheeled for such a small amount of time with a vehicle compared to all the on road time with it.

Also, what are thoughts on pulling the engine and transmission together? TechWrench had a post on cramped space; Guaranteed radiator pull I would think... any other red flags? Thanks,

I was just reading up in my haynes manual as I plan on doing the same thing, and it reccommends always oulling the trans with the motor...basically said to oull radiator and take off all accessories.

I full on agree, Modding is about making it right for your uses. All about the $$$-reward equation.

Man, that's great to hear. Sometimes the Haynes manual doesnt match up to practical applications. Glad to hear someone in support of what I'm trying to accomplish. What are you replacing while your motor is out and free?

To me it seems more logical to transfer your good stuff to the donor vehicle since it has 100K less miles on all the mechanicals. I did that when I bought my 02 - took all my bolts-ons off the 98, put the 98 back to stock, and sold it to recover 1/2 my money for the 02. I even swapped the rear pumpkin since the PO of the 98 had put in a Detroit TrueTrac 10K miles before I bought it.

The frame on my lifted is absolutely prestine as far as rust. The same cannot be said for the donor. Donor interior is smoked in... Plus, I have gone through my truck as far as pads/ calipers, front end, powers steering rack, alternator, starter... Not to mention the weld on bumper mounts and panhard bracket... it goes on and on. Plus, I have spent so much time wiring all my goodies up. I just can't commit to wiring it all over again. I honestly believe that the engine swap is the easiest.

Epic. This is friggin awesome. I love seeing people utilize part cars. Saves a lot of money and if you can get your hands on a donor that's in better shape than your own, your gravy. (NOT SAYING YOUR RIG ISN'T AS NICE, DONT GET SH!T TWISTED) :)

Good luck with all the labor bud!
