Odometer discrepancy

I am looking at a 05' Sport edition. Odometer shows 62k but when the car fax was pulled , it shows 85k on the last inspection. Owner has all records of service since date of purchase, and all inspection summaries indicate that the car should and does only have 62k. It seems that the inspection station mistyped 85 instead of 58k which it should have been. Is there anyway that a digital odometer could have been rolled back? I want to trust the owner because of the paper trail he has really proves the 62k reading to be correct reading. For as much money he has put into it, i doubt this would be wrong. Thanks Jhamblett

yes it is possible to re-program the odometer. But it is much more likely that, as you stated, the inspection station screwed up. In general carfax is a joke. if you want to know if a car has been in an accident then get an elcometer. Want to know if its been well maintained look at the brands the person chose, i.e. is the airfilter a toyota one or a fram? are the tires pep boys specials or are they top shelf? it tells you whether they took it to a reputable shop (or did quality maitenance themselves) Odometers don't get tampered with that much anymore and signs that the numbers don't add up should be all over the place.

I respectfully disagree with your generalization, what is wrong with either Toyota or Fram being installed, PEP Boys special on tires? I suppose if someone were find a great deal at Sams on quality tires they would be wrong? I think the point is that while they may not have the wealth that you may to pay top dollar they are still maintaining the vehicle.

Crappy tires are crappy tires. I was referring to the pep boys tires that are rediculously cheap and suck, I think they are futura or something. Fram filters are garbage, look it up. If you hunt around you can find a quality filter without breaking the bank.

contact carfax & tell them about it, recently someone else had the same thing , called carfax & they changed it.

It's proven to be easier said than done for me. I used to manage a car leasing company and getting carfax to do anything was a tremendous challenge. I'd have the current owner change it with carfax, then buy the car..or give you an additional discount :naughty:

Got it all figured out. Previous owner report it to carfax with all supporting documents and they corrected it same day. Thanks for the help
