Odometer...reset?

My '00 T4R Limited sat on a dead battery for maybe 2-3 months. When I replaced the battery, the odometer started flashing...all 8s. 888888! I've called 2 Toyo dealerships and neither of them had a clue. The center dash lighting is messed up some too (radio face flickers like a loose wire/connection, & the left side backlighting is out).

Another shop I talked to thought maybe the cluster needs replacing.

Odd comparison: my '99 Limited sat with no battery in it for about 2 1/2 months. Put a battery in it & the odo is fine...but the center dash also has no issues there.

Thoughts? Suggestions? Easy repair?

Sounds like the Instrument Cluster needs to be replaced.

But don't take my word on that, get a Second & Third opinion.

I knew someone that had a 2004 Yamaha Deltabox V & his Instrument Cluster was whacked & Yamaha replaced it for him.

That's the only explanation I've gotten so far...I've checked recalls and such for it and there's nothing for the cluster, so I haven't thought about taking it to a dealership. I lost a little faith in going to a dealership after calling two of them and getting this kind of response:

T: Service Department, this is blahblah
M: Hi there, my '00 4R odometer is reading all 8s after sitting on a dead battery, can you tell me what needs to be fixed so I can bring it in?
T: It's doing what?
M: (re-explain)
T: Huh, I've never heard of that before...let me get the Service Manager.
M: *sigh*
T: This is MrBlahBlah, can I help you?
M: (re-explain)
T: Wow, that's a new one on me...in all my years dealing with Toyotas I've never heard of that. You could bring it in and we can run diagnostics to see if it pulls any codes.
M: >.<

Yeah, I really want to pay you for an hour service labor on the offhand chance you have no clue what it is and no idea how to fix it.

Side note: Anyone in the Durham/Chapel Hill/ Raleigh areas (I've seen you on here!) that needs work done, I *HIGHLY* recommend Auto Pro to Call on 15-501, not too far off I-40 past BlueCross/BlueShield. They are the ones who originally suggested replacing the instrument cluster.

i know nothing of this... but this is my opinion.. :pimp:

could you have a bad battery? or bad connection to the battery? corrosion?
 
Nah, it's a new battery, and I scuffed all the dried corrosion from the terminal connectors with one of those brushes...also put new terminal pads & connector lubricant on it. :)

haha i figured as much, for its common sense. :thumb3:

but sometimes we (...I) look over the simple stuff.
 
New cluster. The flickering and display being out sounds like an LED issue. For me, if the brightness is at one specific level (around the middle) it'll happen. The fix is to crank it max and put it back at the ambiance level I prefer.
