OE tire question

I'm probably one of the only people who are actually going in this direction.... but what tire was original on a 1986 4Runner DLX? Mine says 225/75/15 in the door... but it has 235/75/15's on it. Since the speedometer is a touch off/shows that I'm going slower, I feel like it may have came out with 225's.

What was the original tire brand? Wasn't it Bridgestone?

Just in case anyone plans to through "newbie" stones at me.... this is my third one.... and my last one was an 87 with a SAS and 38's!

Thanks.... but I'm done with this one! It's as near as perfect as they come... since it's such a rarity to be in this condition, I can't bring myself to do anything to it. I lucked up... I basically bought it, washed it, did a "tune-up", now have an almost perfect under 100,000 mile first gen. to putt around in. I've only added a soft-top.

I think the OE tires were Bridgestones, but I believe I'll go with a set of near stock size Michelins.

I recall looking at them when they were new on Dealer lots. Invariably, they all seemed to have P225/75R15 Bridgestone Desert Dueler's. I believe that particular tire has long since gone out of production.

Now that you say that, I recall pulling a quite old Desert Dueler out of the spare tire cavity on my '86. That was in '09 I think - amazing if that was the original spare.

Can u just look and see what brand/size the spare is or has that been replaced?

I know my 3rd gen came with Bridgestone dueler 689 from factory

I have an '86 as well which is all original except for the wheels which the dealer installed with 31x10.5s back when my father bought it new (90,000 miles on the odo). My research also came up with 225/75/15 as the OEM tire size. Frankly, I wouldn't mind having the original wheels and to switch to that size myself. This thing is slow enough as it is and larger tires just make it even more of a slug. ....I only use the truck every other weekend or so for runs down to the local home improvement store.

I belive mine still has the desert dueler hanging on the spare tire carrier. Ill take a look and put up a picture if it is. Wonder if mine is the original?

I found my old spare in the scrap pile out back, still on the original 15" steely. Desert Dueler with a date code of 186. My '86 is long gone so I don't know the exact date of manufacture, but it's plausible that that is the original spare.

Now I'm going to be sad when I get around to throwing that thing away.

Come on Kid your tossing mine and 86DLX's "come up" like common TV dinner wrappers?? I actually would like a set of steelies. I bought the 235/75/15 goodyears from Walley world as a price motivated purchase. I don't see the 225 to 235 being a hit on mileage. What is that 10mm wider? I think the 225'swill cost you more that the 74.50 each I paid for my wranglers. 50K warranty and backed by the Great Satan, :wacko:

The 235/75R15 is also a larger diameter, and will weigh more. So while it wouldn't have as large of an impact as going up to a 31x10.50R15, it will negatively affect acceleration and fuel economy. The larger tire will also have a negative affect on braking.

An aggressive tread pattern tire will also have more rolling resistance than a Highway tread tire. So even if both are the same size, the HT tire will get better MPG.

It's all just a matter of what compromises you're willing to accept.

It probably is the original spare. Sell it as a rare, collectible OEM 4Runner tire.

I'm still carrying around my original unused spare under my '97.

Those Goodyear Authorities will come apart on you. Goodyear had to cut huge corners to get into a price range Walmart liked, and they aren't safe.

they are wranglers. I believe they are made in the US or the Federated Republic of Canada. No Chinese tires for me, that's what's unsafe. The price only dropped 8 or 10 bucks. I read a lot of reviews on the wrangle and they have been a consistent performer in the past. I know discount city is no respecter of persons so you may have something there. They are pushing them at that price so I am thinking a very large buy agreement. I will update on country of origin.

Factory original spare on 15" steely rim is still under my '89. Should probably replace the spare with something reliable but I need another rim. I dont want to separate them .
