OEM Front Bumper vs. Plate Bumper ?'s

I've been looking at adding a front bumper and having recently put OME 880's and 5100's on the truck, I wanted to see if anyone was familiar with how much height I might lose if I were to do it?

I've searched and from what I've read the weight of the 2000+ oem front bumper is around 50 lbs (if that's wrong, please let me know).

The savage off road hybrid weighs in around 70lbs:

Any idea if 20 lbs added to the front of the truck would compress the front spring/struts enough to make a significant impact in my ride height?

From what I've read, most people go with 881s in the front if you're carrying extra weight, but if you want to see the difference, put a 20 lb weight on your front bumper, attach it securely, and drive carefully around the block, do some braking and turning and see how the springs react.

880 and 881s are the same weight rating, the 881s are just longer.

The bumper weight won't make you lose height. It's the weight of the winch. If you get synthetic line is a lot lighter.

I have 881. They are for stock weight. I lost maybe an .5 to an inch. You can add a top out spacer to gain that height back. The winch and bumper did soften up the 881 which was nice.

What are the 881 rated for mate ? Just curious. I'm running Eibach 650lbs. And have a SAVAGE from bumper. Going to install my icon CDC front coilovers with icons front coil and smittybilt winch with synthetic line. I hope 650 Coils will hold up good.

Im sure it will handle it. You may need to adjust the front up a bit but the ride should be fine.

I only know the 881's are made for stock weight.

Call up Toytec, their guys will know exactly what the coils can handle and what to recommend for you. They told me very confidently that a steel bumper is no problem for the 881's, you will get 2.75" - 3" of lift(they were exactly right, I'm sitting +3" up front with a 4xInnovations bumper, no winch).

If you put on a winch you will need to upgrade to the 883, but you SHOULD NOT put on 883s without a winch installed already because you will over stress your suspension and could damage components.

Thanks, that's what I was thinking. I'm not going for a winch, jut want the basic deal to stand up to the parallel parkers in DC.

Interesting...I wasn't wild about having to spend extra $$ to upgrade the springs when I get a winch. Good to know you are happy with that setup

I was kind of in your boat when buying. 883's are like driving on rocks without weight and knew it would be some time before I did the winch and bumper. I told myself I could easily sell the used 881's for $100 and buy some better coils in the future for $180. Coils are pretty cheap and easy to swap so not a big deal. Plus I had plans to go with a nice coil over setup in the future if they 881's could not handle it.

I know this is old, but I actually weighed my 96 front bumper, lower splash apron, turn signals, license plate bracket, license plate, and bumper brackets. It is not even half of 50lbs! Exactly 20.5lb on my digital scale!!

Seriously. I know the front bumper is further forward than the cab, but if you're concerned over 20ish LBs, make sure you never gain any weight, and never wheel with a passenger.

I'm guessing you have a 96-98. The fat lip bumpers on the 99-02 have a reinforcement bar that sits behind the metal bumper. The 96-98 models did not have this piece. That thing has to weigh around 20+ lbs all in its own. I'd guess 40-50lbs for the 99-02 bumpers with the reinforcement bar, metal bumper, top trim piece, and lower valence is about right. Also add in a few more lbs if you have the OEM fog assemblies.

You are correct it is a 96. I updated my post...should have included the info initially.
