OEM never used in a 4Runner wiper and blinker stalks/switches

Hello everyone
Here is an upgrade if anyone wants an extra button on their stalks to be used for whatever...
Just installed a used headlight/blinker switch from the another model toyota - I think it was Solara. It is known to fit the pre 1999 models. It has an additional position on the headlight dimmer switch - the DRL OFF function.

Note: This stalk will fit the white plastic holder on the steering column from 1999 back. It wont fit in the 2000 on, as the designs changed.

So, if there is a new headlight stalk on the left, there has to be a new stalk on the right...so I researched around and found a wiper stalk that has an extra function - a headlight cleaner button on the end of the stalk. It came from a Land Cruiser 90.

So this wiper stalk will fit also on the up to 1999 white stalk holder piece on the steering column.

The way to tell the difference between the pre 99 and 00 on stalks, is to look at the hoops that the screws used to attach the stalks to the white plastic steering wheel holder go thru. The pre 99 are closed, and the 2000 on are open. See photo.

You can connect the headlight cleaner switch to do whatever you want. If you want to install actual headlight cleaners, here is the part number of the sprayers. 8504460040... or you can lookup any other model other than the Land Cruiser 90 that uses them.

Please check part numbers before you order, as the ones I have, have not been 100% compared to parts from actual vehicle catalog model codes. (example: KZJ95L-GKMNTW is a model code of Land Cruiser 90 configuration for Europe)

I still have to decide what would I install for functions on these switches. We'll keep you posted.

Very interesting. Can you tell us what's going on with your shifters? I've never seen a manual 4WD shifter that is not a J-pattern. Also, what's the function of the "auto" shift knob? Does the O/D button do anything?

He has a J-shift t-case but is using a auto shifter handle as his shift knob.

I wonder if you can wire the headlight cleaner button to add the function that the 4Runners don't have - a one-time swipe of the wipers? That would be super useful!

The headlight switch appears to have TWO functions that the '99 don't have - the DRL off position, and the AUTO position. I'm assuming the AUTO position won't do anything in our trucks, since there are no ambient light sensors anywhere.

Although now that I look at it, it does not seem to have an "off" position - is the idea that you have the switch in AUTO normally (which would be the same as OFF in our trucks), and then flip it up to parking lights or headlights as needed?

The DRL off position is intriguing, as I currently have a separate switch to override my add-on DRLs in the bumper, this might be a better way to go. Although I'm not sure how the wiring would have to be set up to have the DRLs go off when you rotate the switch to headlights on, thus leaving the DRL off position.

Much to think about!

Ok so before this turns into a modified episode, let me mention that as much as it looks stock, my 4Runner has gone thru many OEM changes thanks to the area where I live right now, Eastern Europe, and me traveling to my home in the US. Both places are two different markets for Toyota and offer options that are not always available in both places.

I wonder if you can wire...

I was thinking to add a 'mist' option on the headlight cleaner, which was available in the US, and all you had to do was to raise the stalk up once for the wipers to move once. It was very useful indeed.

The DRL OFF and AUTO options are for cars that have DRL. DRL OFF basically acts as a totally OFF switch, and the AUTO acts as... auto - it decides when to turn ON your lights based on the ambient light observed from a sensor on the dash. The stalk has appeared in other threads and is more discussed there, but the idea behind DRL is to have constant lighting but during the day if it is set to AUTO, the lights will be dimmer. The other headlight positions are the same - ON park lights, and ON headlights. The inner ring is the regular fog lights switch - ON and OFF.

what other switch swapping have you done?

This 4Runner is base model I guess. But since 2012, I've managed to add pretty much all cool extras available from different markets.

Not all switches are for original 4Runner functions. The antenna switch on the left of the steering wheel is supposed to work...one day... as a screw driver antenna tuning switch, for the ham radio. The ECT next to the antenna switch on the left has no function yet, but the bezel has 2 slots as it is from a right hand drive 4Runner - Hilux Surf. There is also a small switch on the mirror adjusting switch that retracts mirrors, an option not available in the US as the streets are wide.

The other two on the left are for the diff locks - center and rear. Those I got sent from my dad in the US, and retrofitted them.
On the right side you can see another ECT switch above the heat controls which I wired to turn on my accessories without a key in the ignition. - super useful...and guaranteed to drain your battery if you forget it! So if yuo decide to do it, wire it thru a relay and but a LED in an empty slot on the dash to remind you that it is ON.

The 4x4 shift handle is OEM from the VF3AM transfer case used in the US from 2001 till 2002. It is the AWD multi-mode transfer case with the center diff lock switch on the left of the steering wheel. It is not the J shift and moves just forward and back. The J shift with a 2-4 select switch is the previous multi-mode transfer case, which is also the successor of the VF2A transfer which is the regular 4x4 J shift model, that has no center diff.

The auto shift knob is for the O/D switch as I've wired it as a PTT for my radio. Also the added height on the lever sets my hand closer to the controls of the radio and center console. That's it.

I still have lots of stuff to try to do, mainly add an ABS in the future, seat heaters, engine preheater, and so ON.

When you try to find something, look for parts that share common function. Say you want to end up finding a wiper stalk like this, look on ebay for foreign toyotas, and see what they have as options, then look up the car according to market and see what it has and what are the part numbers. Then compare pictures of part numbers and so on...

Hope this helps
