OEM Oil Filter Difference: Factory vs Dealer

I am doing my first OC today and noticed that the dealer Oil Filter is different in size and part# than the Factory one. The dealer one is a bit shorter, but same size diameter and thread size.

4R: 2007 V6

Factory PN: 90915-2004
Dealer PN: 90915-YZZD1

Are they the same Filter?

I did a search on here, but that PN (first 5 digits) just reveals two matches, both which don't help.

I'm going to trust the dealer and install this new one, as I've already got it off and the threads and diameter appear to be the same - just the PN difference bothers me.

According to this post, they are the same. the 90915-2004 is just discontinued.

ya the oil filter I bought at wally world was quite a bit shorter than the stock one. Anyone have a bonafide LINK to a place to buy dealer/stock ones?

Just get dealer's filter, those work just fine.

90915-20004 is a Japan made filter. 90915-YZZD1 is a smaller V6 filter. 90915-YZZD3 is the equivalent in size to the 90915-20004, which is the V8 filter. D1 and D3 are same, except the D3 is a bit taller than the D1.

So there's no problem in using the D3 on the v6 engine? Seems if they are the same, then the bigger filter capacity would be better.

My dealer always uses the D3 when they change the oil in my V6.

I have been using the V-8 Filter (90915-YZZD3) since about the 3rd change. 74500 Trouble free miles. They are made in Thailand by Denso. You can get them from a dealer in Texas off ebay for $39.90 a case (10) $3.90 a filter. That is cheaper than the Fram Tough Gaurd filters ($5) at wally world.
They come with a pastic seal over the open end and the rubber gasket pre-lubed with a small amount of grease.

The filter ending in 2004 is the Japan filter they install at the plant. It is no longer available in the US, as I under stand it. There was a thread several years ago that covered this in great detail, including pics of these filters cut open to reveal the filter media. IMHO, the 2004 filter is a better filter, because of the type of filter media they use. The cost, when they were still available in the US, was very high (about $9.00 or $10.00 ea), which is probably why they discontinued them here. Most now use the D3 filter from the V8, which works just fine in the V6.

As others have said, the Toy filter from Thailand is the one available here now. The best one came from Japan, but isn't usually availble - I've tried!

I use the Thailand filters, but another good filter, IMHO, would be the Fram Tough Gaurd. Of inexpensive WalMart filters, the Tough Gaurd seems to fair pretty well on places like bobistheoilguy.com .

I know this is a old post but figured I'd ask.

On Fram's website it says the tough guard is for synthetic blend oils, can this also be used with non-synthetic oils which I assume I would be using with my 4runner?

You could have just started a new thread for this. I thought, for a minute, that this was someones first oil change on their 2007 T4R. I was about to make a call to "motor protection services".

Im not 100% sure but, Fram is just trying to say that its safe to use with synthenics. I dont change my own oil though. Its been a while since I bought a filter.

I'd say spend 12 dollars and get a nice K&N or a genuine TRD oil filter.

Lmao! Somebody starts a thread about bumpers, spacer lifts or driveline clunk, etc. and he gets inundated with replies regarding "do a search". This poster does a search and he finds a thread on the subject matter and it's suggested that he starts a new thread. :lmao:

Fram has done some great marketing over the years. They're popular and sell a lot of air and oil filters. But that's about where it ends. For oil filters, I stick with Toyota brand. You can find them pretty cheap by the case on-line. I've seen several comparisons where different brands have been torn down and components compared. The Fram standard filters are made from cheap components and are poorly constructed.
