So its time for new breaks and rotors and it's come down to two oem pads/oem rotors or akebono pads/oem rotors. I'm mostly mixed city highway driving with off road once a month. Thought I'd pick your brains on this one.

A couple brake pad changes back I used OEM pads composed of the OEM material on the back. On the front I upgraded to ceramic pads from the OEM material. My front rotors went from perfect to grooved! Back rotors still perfect. The point is if you upgrade to ceramic you need ceramic compatible rotors. I stick with OEM material now.

The brand doesn't matter the material the pads are composed of is what is important.

i used oem, rotors w/ akebono pads once. pads dies with in a 14 months. was running 285/70/17's slimline bumper, winch and gobi rack; noted for additional weight. I switched to power stop brakes and rotors 2years later and a rear bumper with dual swing arms and I still haven't had to mess with by brakes/ rotors.
I think they might be good for stock, and preformed well, but akebono's went pretty quick for me.

Same. The ceramic not only grooved my rotors but wore out really fast.

OEM pads ARE Akebono. Just did mine last week.

OEM for pads and rotors (and shims!) Make sure they are the original originals, Toyota carries two lines, one that comes from factory and one that's stocked in dealerships (has AZ in the number). I had everything done last summer; pads, rotors, shims, pins and clips.(even got the og grease) Can't go wrong with OEM.

I always use OEM from a dealership to avoid on line counterfit. I rarely change rotors unless issue.
I always check rotor thickness and use the real OEM not the budget dealer pads.
Since the brakes are also critical to the 4WD traction system, I prefer to change pads early.

Thanks for the video and parts list! Of those parts, what is actually needed for a standard front brake service? Planning to do pads, rotors & shims. Wasnt sure about the other pins, springs & fitting kits.
It's hard to tell whats what in the toyota diagrams, certain part numbers are just not listed. I haven't personally done my brakes before so not sure exactly what standard items should just be replaced. Any input's appreciated!

I use Centric rotors.... been using them for 14 years now and have had GREAT results.
