OEM Parts Cost/ Availability for First Gen

Hi All,

I recently picked up an '87 4runner at auction. It's missing quite a few parts, and I'm weighing the cost/ benefit of going OEM vs. aftermarket. I've been trying to research online, but I haven't found much info. I thought you guys might be able to help.

How much would I reasonably expect to pay for original parts for the following:

Tailgate
Camper Shell
Center console
Altimeter/ Inclinometer
Front turn signals
Mud flaps
Seatbelts
Rear tube bumper
2 front bucket seats
Rear seat

A bunch of that won't be available "new" at all. A used inclinometer runs $150-$200 on EBay last time I looked. A topper in very good condition will be super hard to find, and run several hundred as well, ditto for the tailgate. Rear tube bumpers from TrailGear or 4xInnovations or Marlin Crawler will run a couple hundred, depending. About all you're going to find from the dealer will be turn signals, and maybe seat belts and mudflaps, so your OEM vs. aftermarket question doesn't really apply.

Like KidVermicious said most of these parts are no longer available from the dealer. I did a quick search on seatbelts and the front turn signals. The seatbelts look to be all gone but the turn signal assemblies or just the lenses are still available. Everything else you are going to have to find aftermarket or used.

Here's an idea for you, since it sounds like it was in pretty bad shape when you got it (and I assume it went pretty cheap!).

Spend a couple grand on SAS'ing the front, lifting it and dropping a rear locker in it, then sell it in Oregon for 4 grand!

Seriously though, there is no way you're going to do any type of restoration on that if you're missing all those parts, they just aren't available any more. You can get some cheap seats on craigslist from a Honduh or another toyota product, and the rear fiberglass top can be replaced with a can-back cover, but just that alone is 1700 + shipping and it just doesn't sound to me like a good project to throw money at.

Its sad to hear about otherwise decent 4runners and trucks being parted out, but with the amount of stuff you have listed there, you'll be into it easily at around 4 or 5 grand just for the replacement parts!

This is why I suggested turning it into a trail rig, most hardcore guys will take that and turn it into a solid runner, and most of them could care less if it had a top or tailgate on it! So long as its got a solid drivetrain, leave 'em a couple of things to do on their own (like dual cases and front locker, etc.), you'll make a couple bucks on it.

I know of one 4r right now that has very little body left due to rust (you can literally put your hand down into the rear quarter panels!), but already has offers of 5500 bucks!

where are you located? i recently found a guy in san jose who has a backyard filled with nothing but first gen parts. he literally has everything you can think of. even a complete turbo motor. unfortunately he doesnt ship so you'd have to make your way out to nor cal and stock up. he even has people from central america buying parts. craziness.

Not even close to accurate. Sure you can't buy all the stuff brand new but there are plenty of used parts available. I have seen plenty of people give the tops away due to how much space they take up.

From what I've seen in the past year or so for eBay prices on USED parts:

Consoles usually go for about $100-200. Even well-used ones with worn tops and cracks.

Altimeter/inclinometer probably $150-200.

Front signals maybe $10-20 each.

I've seen mud flaps go for $50-100 or more for a set of 4. Depending on condition and hardware.

Belts go for about $30 each. Sometimes more. I ended up getting new aftermarket shoulder belts for the rear since they'll just bolt into the roll bar.

Front and rear seats are usually at least $150 each. If you can find them.

Even used parts can be quite expensive. I bought some odds and ends OEM. Some things aren't as expensive as you'd think. Some things are incredibly expensive OEM.

Well if you lived in Oregon you could get all of that from the salvage yards in one trip. I am not sure the cost. You can have my two old seats I just replaced them They do need to be reupholstered.

You don't absolutely NEED mudflaps or an inclinometer right off the bat. You can join all the Toyota forums and wait for someone parting out a vehicle. 2nd gen front and back seats can be made to fit.

Again, where are you located? Many members have random parts available. There are always fiberglass tops on Craigslist. They go for $50 to $300. I imagine they can be had cheaply because there is not a huge market for 4Ruinner tops. You could also just get a Softopper instead.

Things like seat belts and turn signals can come from someone parting or from eBay. I've had a lot of fun finding obscure parts in EC for my 1st gen. I found a crappy cheap SR5 console in poor condition and restored it. I have bought two inclinometers for less than $39. The extra one will probably go in my son's Tacoma. Plenty of parts are still out there. Good luck.

Just not true... I go to junk yards all the time and get parts.I could put that truck back together for under 1200 easy prolly closer to 800.00... That is not to mention yotayard or 4runner house and multiple places like that. People love these trucks and there are parts places everywhere in every state. There are plenty of aftermarket parts new and OEM still available. I love the soft topper idea Nervo suggested.

He could also buy another 4 runner and really go to town with extra parts or get what he needs and part the other stuff out he doesn't need...

Perhaps I did not make myself clear enough in my post. The OP will never be able to find those parts BRAND NEW AT ANY DEALERSHIP!

Yeah, you can probably find most of the stuff at junk yards, but most of it is shit. If this guy was looking to buy oem or aftermarket, he's probably looking for new, unadulterated parts, not something that's been sitting around for months/years in the yards.

And I called yotayard the other day, they have lots of dashcaps, but every one they have has various cracks/chips. Not one was clean and uncracked. Of course, they just sold one a few weeks ago that was "immaculate", but that's just my luck.:yell:

Just going by what you said... take a chill pill restoration is a fun and rewarding hobby with these trucks and I guess it is about attitude...

What parts do you need we have a great salvage yard Toyota specific I go to all the time. Plus I have a few friends back in North Carolina with, between them, over 150 Toyotas and tons of parts.

if you search craiglist hes got a ton of stuff on there. he always has seatbelts, drive shafts, and ecus on there. he's super chill and his prices are waaay cheaper than going to a shop or the dealer. He has everything!

Hope I'm not too late to chime in.

I've been using this site, Amayama Trading, so far my shopping list has been:

• Upper & lower rear control arms (one lower had to be sourced from Toyota Parts Overstock - Dependable, Proven Quality Toyota Parts Online)
• 2 Front diff mounts & hardware
• Above was about AUD $850.00 delivered (cheaper than getting no bushes and messing About)
• Rear coil rubbers upper & lower
• Front & rear sway bar D bushes
• Panhard bushes
• This order came to about AUD$145.00 delivered

All OEM parts from Toyota Japan. Works well for me as they have an office in Sydney. Did a bit of research and decided to go with rubber over poly bushes.

Process is you work out your part numbers, add them to your order, send it off and they let you know what parts are available and then you pay your money. Took maybe 2 and half weeks from initial inquiry to having the parts in my hands. Which is bloody good timing to get anything to Oz.

Apart from the prices from the dealers I didn't want anyone at the local dealer's spares counter having a stroke when being asked for parts for a 24 yro vehicle and then being told that "If we can get the parts, and they'll cost $1000's it'll take 6 months to get 'em"

yeah I know this is probably an expensive way to get parts but I reckon once all the bits are replace it should last me for a good 15 odd years at least.

I don't lnow how much would be available for the year, but try looking up some of the parts you're looking for on Rockauto.com.....Good luck :thumb:
