oem parts??

So I am feeling a little adventureous and have decided to do my timing belt myself! So my local parts store has what they claim are oem parts, but I am curious (and cautious) and want to do it right. Should I stick with parts from TOYOTA, or are these parts any different?? I plan to replace most parts(water pump, t-belt,tensoner, all gaskets and exterior belts, am I missing anything??).

I put Toyota parts in my Toyota, they lasted long in the first place for a good reason.

The Toyota branded parts are sure to be at the expected level of quality because they meet Toyota's standards under statistical analysis.

If you go with an OEM part they might be the same part in a different box or they might have other differences.

They might have been made at a different location, on a different shift, made of different parts, different tolerances, different materials etc.

That is not to say they are not as good.

Toyota may want one failure in 5,000 where the company itself may let 1 failure in 2,500 be acceptable. Sometimes the company exceeds Toyota's requirement and makes all the parts to a higher standard. Some non-Toyota branded parts may be better for this reason. It really comes down to the company producing the part and how much they want to spend manufacturing.

I have seen some "OEM" water pumps that were made in China. I would not touch those with a ten foot pole.
Make sure you get quality parts "made in Japan" and you should be in good shape.

OEM is up to you but I would recommend at least having the actual t-belt an oem part and probably the tensioner too. Don't worry about who makes the other belts and you can get good water pumps from ordinary auto parts stores. You did mention gaskets though and I don't know why. The only gasket I recall is the "form in place gasket" (fipg) for the water pump. Since you will have to drain the coolant, get new radiator hoses too, one upper, one lower.
