OEM Rear Bumper Replacement?

I drove across the country for the holidays and had some work done to my 4Runner at my brothers shop. Needless to say everything went well, both there and back, but while I was there somehow my cousin managed to back into my bumper on the 4Runner (relying on the "beep" from the camera).

Needless to say the bumper needs to be replaced. It's dented on the side, so much that it won't clip back in under the quarterpanel area, and really only one screw is keeping it in place. It's also cracked at the bottom under the taillight.

I don't believe any other damage has been done, but with the natural curve on the rear quarterpanel I'm not 100% sure. It looks fine.

Regardless we did the claim with her insurance, State Farm, and had it noted that once I got back in CA I would be having it fixed. I just got home on Sunday, so planning on giving them a call.

When I called back in VA they told me that I had two options:

One would be to use their collision center where they would have it fixed that day for me, barring something crazy. There would be nothing for me to do except drop it off and pick it up.

The other would be to take it to one of their inspection places and they'd cut me a check that day for the damages they found, and I could do whatever I wanted to do with it.

My main issue or dilemma is that I want an OEM bumper replacement. Not something else being the vehicle is so new. Not to mention it being a TRD Pro model, I'm curious if they will have the parts needed as it's not a standard version. I believe the Pro and the Off-Road/Trail are the same rears minus the black valence, but could be wrong.

According to the State Farm guy I talked to he couldn't say whether it would be an OEM replacement or not, but if I took the check to Toyota and they found more damage than what State Farm did, they could submit something and have State Farm pay the remaining cost for me.

Has anyone had an issue like this before? I assume going through Toyota would be better? I'm just worried about the OEM bumper replacement costing more than whatever State Farm thinks it should and running into an issue there.

This is the first time I've ever had an accident or anything like this so this is all new to me.

Just going to be a standard bumper replacement for a Trail/TRDOR and TRD Pro. They would likely re-use your black valance if it was not damaged as it is a separate piece that utilizes clips. I would suggest using a really good body shop that can color match perfectly. The bumper itself takes about 10 minutes to remove and reinstall.

The color was my main reason of wanting to go to Toyota. Well. One of them. Besides being OEM, but if State Farm would truly do just as good of a job then I'd rather just have them do it all. I'm guessing that wouldn't be the case.

Good call on the rear valence, didn't even think of it being a clip like the front. It looks fine, shouldn't need to be replaced.

I would suggest finding the most reputable body shop in your area and picking them over a Toyota dealer. Dealerships generally aren't focused on the best quality. The shop would also be able to order a new rear bumper for you. You may have to pay a few bucks for the difference between new OEM and reconditioned. I remember on my Lexus it was a 22 dollar difference so I just paid the up charge. It's pretty cheap, to avoid the shipping costs, just have a local dealer price match or get as close as possible.

Do you have shots of the carnage? I had a similar incident when I was powering out of a rutted portion of the trail and managed to smash the rear portion of the passenger side bumper into a tree. 20 mins with a heat gun and I popped the dent right out. It still has some scratches and cracks but from 5 ft it looks good as new. If you 4wheel you're going to bang up that rear bumper anyways :P

OEM factory paint is always going to be better than any repair. Just a thought.

I would at least entertain the option of having an adjuster review the damage and assess the cost of fixing. Maybe a steel or aluminum bumper upgrade could be had.

I don't have a ton on my phone, but the bumper legit has a crack in it and the pieces that lock the bumper in (I assume they are clips) are broken besides one or two.

The dent itself isn't that bad, but it broke parts that would keep the bumper on.

I have a great local shop that we have used on our Range Rover, Highlander, and they painted my Trail hood. Hit me up and I will send you the info. They were spot on with color match and customer service, and, if you do not want to go through insurance, they will work with you. If you want to use insurance, they will make it easy, and if you spec out on the repair that the TRD valence needs to be replaced, ask for the valence back, or remove before you take it in. You can easily turn it for a few $$ on here and use that money towards the deductible.

Following this thread as I recently did a similar thing in my 4R. Didn't see that there was someone parked behind me and cracked my rear bumper cover.

I've been teaching my 15 yr old son how to drive. A few months ago, while backing out of a driveway to do a three-point turn, he backed into a light post.

Thankfully, he wasn't going that fast, but he smashed the left taillight, and cracked the bumper. He also managed to break the upper clip that is directly below the taillight and the bumper clips into that.

I purchased a color matching bumper same model bumper from a junkyard in Texas on eBay for $182; bought the OEM taillight on eBay for $125 and bought the clip on eBay for $35.

The only thing is that the seam at the quarter panel is creased and the original seal is split.

I don't know whether to just apply some automotive sealant to it or pay the $$$ to have a bodyshop try and fix it ... I do plan on adding a bumper over the Spring....

Damage according to State Farm came out to a little under $1,900. The fender is damaged in the area that sits behind the bumper. All the clips are broke, among other various things.

$1,900 is their estimate with the parts needed, painted, and labor for our area.

I literally just went through same drill with my 4-Runner. Sitting at a red light and moron behind me thought light changed and he started and ran square into back of me. Honda accord now about a foot shorter as folded his front end up. My Runner cracked the back accent strip and creased the bumper cover. Same as you, took to my Insurance and there quote was fix in a day for $300 dollars. I then took it to local Toyota dealer with very good body section and behold, can't fix crease, must replace and now claim at $1000. Of course my insurance and party that hit me balked on this. Held my ground and had all new OEM parts replacing the damaged items. Took a month and worth it.

It's all her. They took fault and everything. I haven't had to get mine involved and hopefully it stays that way. I'm sure Toyota is going to say it'll cost more, so we'll see what happens from there.

 Nice !! Full disclosure i almost did this the other night , without realizing son turned off backup sensor , right back into his :mmph: ! :whistle:lucky I didn't F*^k both of them ! Win win for you OTHER than all the hassle & time dealing with .

I suggest going with one of State Farm's certified vendors. Their vendors want to be part of the State Farm network so they have an incentive to do a good job. And if they do a bad job, you have some leverage.

That's what I did after getting in a wreck last year. Even though I used the other guy's insurance since he was at fault, I still chose a State Farm, my insurance, vendor. They did a great job at matching the paint.

Of course do you research on the list of vendors they give you. This particular shop had a number of high end cars being repaired so I felt pretty good about it.

It's amazing how much body work cost these days. Most of mine was cosmetic but still ended up costing $8,500.

Wife spent 20 years at State Farm and they are very demanding on their vendors so I would trust them.:art:

4runner bumper

some old lady smashed into my bumper and tire. I'm asking for the money and putting on my own C4 fab bumper. I will ask c4 to remove the fab text though. seems a little fruity.
