OEM rear shock install question

2004 4Runner AWD Limited ---- Can somebody tell me on a NON XREAS suspension -- how many washers are used on each rear shock?

As a reference point -- I tore out my XREAS suspension and replaced the fronts with Bilstein 5100 shocks and purchased OEM NON XREAS shocks for the rear. The rear shocks came with the shock itself, rubber bushings and a top nut. Thats it. The top nut is drawn all the way down (no threads showing) and the washer just won't sit tight against the upper bushing. It jingles, the bushing spins and the actual top part of the shock I can turn with my hand. I'm thinking perhaps there is more than one washer that belongs on there to get the damn thing tightened down. The one washer that we used was used on the XREAS shocks that we took off.

Can somebody, that has done this, tell me DEFINITIVELY what I should have on the rears in terms of components. Or even someone that has non XREAS rear OEM shocks maybe can take a peek at theirs and see what is back there.

Many thanks in advance to anyone that can help with this question.

I just went and looked at a stock sr5 (2006-2009) here at work. It uses three washers, one on each side of the lower bushing and one on top of the top bushing. Not the best pic but maybe good enough.

Thanks a ton and most appreciated. I assume the rear suspension didn't change with the slight change in body style in '06?

It didn't change as far as I know. I'll look at a 2003-2005 when I go to lunch in a little while to confirm.

Any chance to take a peek at an '03-'05? My rear shocks look nothing like that picture. I'm wondering if Mossy Toyota (toyotapartscheap.com) sent me the wrong shocks. I don't have my Iphone cable to upload a picture to show what mine looks like. Will do tomorrow morning. I may stop by my local Toyota dealer and ask them to show me what the shocks are supossed to look like and what equipment comes with them.

Just looked at a 2003-2005 sr5, exactly the same. From top to bottom:
Nut
Washer
Bushing
Frame
Washer
Bushing
Washer
Shock

Here's a pic showing top view:

Now I am really wondering why the dealership sent me shocks and bushing that look entirely different than those. Will post picture tomorrow of mine.

Thanks again Swamp for the effort

Will post that as well with the picture. The fact that mine is a Limited should not change anything should it?

No, that won't matter. I did the exact swap on my 03 Limited, I just ordered the non-xreas shocks.I do remember going to the local dealer and ordering the washers because the new shocks didn't come with them. Once I got the correct washers everything worked fine.

Part #4853080372 that was sent to me and we installed. Pay no attention to the "wetness"...I sprayed some WD40 on the bushing yesterday to keep the damn thing from squeaking

The only thing I see different is the bushing on the top, I'm thinking maybe this was changed at some point. It looks like adding the one additional spacer would allow you to get things snug, still don't know that you'll be able to fully tighten it down. Now that you've posted that picture, I really think the bushing on the OEM shocks I ordered was the same. I don't have a part number on my order receipt, but I can get the part number this weekend if you'd like. I did look up that part number and itis listed as the correct shock that you need.

I'm thinking the next step is talking to a dealer to verify the correct number of washers and their placement. It's possible they are different given the design of the top bushing. I remember having to do this on mine (I had planned to use the ones off the xreas shocks but I had already tossed them).

I spoke to a service guy at Mossy where I bought the damn things and his comment was "I don't know without seeing the vehicle"....I said "you can't tell me how many washers go on the back shock of a non XREAS fitted 4Runner?"....."not without seeing it" he says. So I just hung up on him.

I am going to stop by my local dealership today and ask them to show me the correct parts that go on the truck. If they are exactly what Mossy sent me then I will ask them what "extra" washers, etc. are required to get it snug with that different designed top bushing.

No need to dig your info out Swamp. You have been most helpful here. I will report back my findings. Thanks again.

The local shop I worked with didn't have any parts in stock to show me, but the parts guy was able to look up the part and tell me what was needed and where it went.

In the meantime, you could probably stack a couple regular washers between the nut and top washer to allow you to tighten things down.

Definitely considering doing just that.

Went to local dealership today and found out that there are three separate pieces that need to be purchased in addition to the shock, bushings and top nut. They call them "adapters"....appears to be fancy word for washers.

Installed retainers (washers, adapters, etc.) and all is well. So for those looking to change out rear shocks make sure you get the three additional retainers for each side in addition to what comes in the actual shock package. They are indeed sold separately.

Side note to this post...

Just a note; looking at your picture, you are missing a washer. The cupped washers go below the bottom busing and above the top busing. The nippled washer goes between the bottom busing and the frame (accommodating the "nipple" on the top of the bushing). That missing cupped washer on the bottom is why you have the space between the nut and the top washer.

I just purchased a set of KYB Excel-G replacement shocks for my '06 4Runner and the instructions are nothing but worthless drawings. Your pic here helped me figure out which bushing went where. Thanks.
