OEM shocks or not?

Hello,

Have not been here in a while but glad to be back...:)
I noticed that my 2 rear shocks on my 2010 SR5 have begun to leak a bit...they are the standard OEM that came with the vehicle (we bought the vehicle brand new)

I do go off-roading and i make it a point to do so ...so on average maybe 3-4 times a year...on some pretty cools trails in the SoCal area and actually used the 4 lo and atrac etc .. however i don't quite have a budget to customize like harper 7 but I would like to little by little ...maybe do some minor mods at the right time.....I'm pretty much stock 100% as is

so the question to all the experts is, if I HAVE to replace the rear shocks...should I get the OEM ones or should I get something maybe better suited for off roading ...that my not brake the bank...say max 2x the cost of the OEM but that may be worth it...

5100's are a good place to start and since the OEM Tokico shocks are about a 40.00 shock, you can definitely do better since you do some off roading.
 
the 5100 seem great
i looked at the thread on the lift kits..very cool,

But now I am slightly confused...

do i need additional hardware to the bare pair of shocks.....or can i simply buy the pair of 5100's and replace one to one with the OEM without additional parts?
 
Buy 2 for the rear, install them yourself. Nothing else needed. Only one nut on top and 1bolt on the bottom. You will feel the differance in better control off-road. Do the front later as budget allows and sett to 0.85 or 1.75 to level.

If the rears need replacement, then how far behind are the fronts? I am of the opinion that all 4 shocks s/b replaced with those with same attributes. New on back with old up front makes no sense to me.

Billys are an excellent value-compromise between cost, simplicity of installation and improved ride.

Definitely go with at least Bilstein 5100's since you off-road. Supposed to add an inch or two of down-flex.
Bilstein 5100 Rear shocks for FJ/4Runner

Extremely easy to self-install:
- Jack up on the frame, add jack stands.
- Remove rear tire
- Two bolts off and on.
- Replace rear tire.
- Do same on other side and done.

As others have said, I also recommend swapping out the front shocks at the same time, but it isn't absolutely necessary if you lack the funds right now. Fronts are harder to self-install because they are coilovers. Unless you buy a full coilover assembly (shock + spring) pre-set to your desired height you have to rent or borrow special equipment to compress the spring. Plus just getting the front suspension apart to remove the assembly can be a chore (I just did it a few weeks ago for a spacer lift). Plus the added cost of the required alignment. Doing front + rear together will be at least 3x-4x the cost of self-installing just the rears.

Just be aware that if the rears are gone, the fronts may go next month... and if you buy all four shocks as a package you may get a discount.

Admittedly, my 4rnnr is stock as well...im too busy tinerking with my motorcycles...

but as a point of reference...if something is used up, or breaks...it is the EXACT time to upgrade...period-end of story.



as has been said, go find a solid replacement upgrade part that you can afford, slide those in...and live the better life...then when its time, and money affords, upgrade the front.

Where in SoCal are you? I have a pair of 2015 OEM rears with 1k on them if you want a decent deal and OEM is the route you want to go.
 
Regular ol' shocks

How about recommendations for just regular shocks for my '97 4Runner. I don't do off roading, just Los Angeles driving. Looking for good, reliable rear shocks but don't need height adjustment or anything fancy. I'd also like to avoid the OEM shocks as I think even for city driving, I could do better. Any thoughts about KYB shocks for the rear? Thanks for any help.
