My uncle had these wheels on his old tacoma, so I'm not sure if they are tacoma specific wheels or 4runner wheels. They are oem toyotas regardless.

At first I thought they were kind of boring. But I've actually warmed up to them and am thinking of painting them gunmetal, but paint jobs on wheels have to be done right or they look like crap fast.

Thanks for the info. I guess somebody must have replaced the original wheels with these on my uncles old truck.

I thought it would be nice to get a set of alloy wheels, but these wheels and tires seem to be in pretty good shape still and the runner drives great with them even on the highway which surprised me.

I love the TRD Trails Teams but I can justify the cost, they are just too much for me so I think I'm gonna go with steelies...am I the only one that will have them? I've done a lot of researching on rims of late and can't seem to find a 3rd gen with black steelies, not the stock things people call wheels but the Cragar Black D style ones. Is there a reason no one uses them? I'm thinking I'll have to go 17" to fit the Tundra 231mm big brake kit down the road, someone set me straight on that please!

Painted the unmachined surfaces (lots and lots of precise masking...)
265/70r16 Triangle A/T's (surprisingly well performing cheap tires)

what was your process for doing this? did you have to do any sanding on the wheel "windows"? primer? or just clean and paint?

also how did you mask off the wheel.. just normal painting tape?

I used a fine bristle wire wheel to clean the wheels of any dirt or loose particles. Then I used acetone to clean any oil or impurities off. I just used 1" blue painters tape to mask off the machined surfaces. One good coat of self etching primer, then 3 light coats of paint with about 10 min in between coats. Let it dry for an hour then hit it with another good coat of paint. I didn't bother clear coating but it wouldn't be a bad idea. Also, pull the masking tape off while it's still tacky to prevent chipping.

thanks. will the acetone do any harm to the clear coat on the machined portion of the wheel?

I took the clear off with the wire wheel. Well, most of it. Makes it polishable too

I am very happy with the turn on my(1998)4Runner with new (to me) 17" SR5 rims and tires (Bridgestone Dueller 265 70 17). No lifts and no rubbing at all. :happy:
