Newly installed Toyota Trail wheels.

I just installed these 17" Toyota Trail wheels on my 98 4runner, switching from the OEM 16" 6 spokes. I also made sure to change to 265/65/17 tires as they were an exact OD diameter match for the original 265/75/16 tires. They also tucked into the wheel wells perfectly, just like the OEM 16" wheels and tires did.

I have 17" "snowflakes" from the 2020 5th gens on this 1996. I did the Tundra brake mod so these fit those calipers well. Tire size is 255 75R 17.

Tire Size Question

Wondering if you could help a brother out with some info about wheel size. In your post below you were running LT285/75R16 with 1.2” Sonoran Lift and had some trimmed valance / squashed pinch weld. I’m thinking about running that same wheel/tire size with a 1.5” lift and was wondering if trimming or modifying anything is required with that wheel size. My 3rd Gen is stock but for the lift so I still have (and want to keep) my running boards and mud flaps. Thanks!

The offset makes a big difference. The wheels in that picture are 80-series Land Cruiser - which push the wheels out farther and cause more fender clearance issues. If you have near-stock offset wheels, you shouldn't have to trim the front of the wheel wells (bumper), but you will likely still have to deal with the rear of the wheel well somehow.

Well, that's a blast from the past!
Mr. phattyduck has an excellent point about the Land Cruiser wheels, so here's the same tires, same set-up, different wheels.

As it sits currently it will still occasionally contact the area near the pinch weld. It's my daily driver, no contact when I'm on the road.

By that point I no longer had running boards so I can't answer that part. I had to get that pinch weld flat. The valance is very easy to trim- I used a utility knife and followed the flow of the bumper line.
The Sonoran Steel 1.2 is approximately 2.5" in the front and 3" in the rear.

I can say that the two biggest issues I had with the 96 was
needing a 1" wheel adapter (spacer) to avoid tire contact with the upper a-arm (both with the stock split tri-spokes and the land cruiser wheels).

and I added a 1" body lift to gain more clearance between the body and fender when wheeling to avoid fender/tire contact. I don't remember that being an issue before the body lift for daily driving, but added that pretty quickly after the 285s.

My husband is running a similar lift and body lift with his stock mudflaps (never had running boards), fine when not wheeling. Sometimes they get beat up when he doesn't take them off. He was running the 285/75r16 but now the tires in this pic are LT255/85r16- pizza cutters.

If you're still curious , I'd guess the former Brooklyn Bar and Grill was taken over by Yemen Kitchen and they didn't bother altering the old sign much other than dropping the Bar as they probably don't drink or serve alcohol for religious reasons...
