driving home last night, my windshield was hit by a rock in the middle and developed a crack from the bottom up.. it started out as one straight 3 inch crack but by the time i got home it became an upside down "j" about 6 inces now and growing "sigh".. anybody now how much an oem glass costs? or should i go aftermarket? or should i just have it repaired, is it repairable? going aftermarket will not have the water repellant feature the oem has... help...

I believe in FL it's law insurance has to replace cracked windshields w/ no cost to you.

You should check with your insurance first. They should cover it or you will have at least an out of pocket deductable to pay. I know certain states by law require the insurance company to replace a cracked windshield free of charge but that is in South Carolina where my Ma in law has had hers replaced several times over the years (due to highway driving and rocks). I have Geico and live in NC where they will not replace the windshield by law but i only have a deductable to pay in the case of replace. I had a rock smack mine leaving about a quarter size mark and Safelite came out and fixed it with some apoxy due to it's size covered by my policy. I know that Safelite would be a good choice and it would be way less expensive then OEM and just as good quality for replacement. You can call the dealership and Safelite but like i said contact your insurance first.

That crack does not sound like it is repairable. The entire crack needs to fit within the size of a dollar bill. If it has already spread, it might be too late.
I know a lot of people say that OEM glass is better than aftermarket, but I'm not entirely convinced of that. Not to mention it is about twice the price. I have had aftermarket windshield replacements on previous cars with no problems.
I had a claims adjuster give me a good suggestion a while back (after my car was broken into not once, but twice within 2 weeks :redbrick
and that is to lower your comprehensive deductible to $50. Your premiums go up a bit, but that way your are covered better for door dings, theft, windshields, etc. I live in CO and cars here get shellacked with rocks. The lower deductible pays for itself if you get a new windshield every 2-3 years.

OEM is cheaper through Partznet (~$800 I believe). Still a tough choice between OEM and aftermarket, personally I'm not sure it OEM is worth it.

Go to a Jiffy Lube and ask them.
i didn't know jiffy lube does windshield repairs...
$211 for oem? what year is your 4runner.. i have a '06 limited and they said oem is $1100.. :sobbing:

I didn't know Safelite used OEM glass, but maybe that explains why I have had good experiences with the windshields I've had replaced by Safelite.

It can probably be "repaired", but you will likely still see the crack. Basically, all they do to "repair" a windshield is to fill it with an epoxy to prevent the crack from spreading further. It doesn't improve much cosmetically. If the crack is in your line of sight, you might want to get the windshield replaced anyway. It's up to you.

I'd get it replaced with a reputable non-OEM brand. Cracked glass is a safety item and it won't be properly fixed without replacing it. IMO, OEM is pretty thin glass and it gets chipped easily. My car is less than 2 years old and it is very pitted. I'll prolly replace the front windshield in about 5 years.

We had ours replaced after just a year of the truck inservice. stupid rocks in Alberta.
Went to Speedy Glass, 208 bucks, installed.
I have zero glass coverage on our vehicles. Complete ripoff. Do yourself a favor, drop the glass coverage and pay out of pocket whenever you need the front done.
In terms of quality, the speedy one has been great.

Correct me if I am wrong but... that $211 quote for oem glass is for a windshield that meets the manufacturer's specifications as far as dimensions, material composition, clarity, etc... It is not for the original Toyota glass. $1100 sounds about right for a Toyota stamped windshield.
I bought my 4runner from CarMax and they replaced my windshield with Pilkington glass. They're one of the largest manufacturers of replacement glass. They actually make glass for OEM. Any replacement windshield is good as long as you carefully inspect for clarity (no ripples, dirt, etc in the glass). Our 4runners are magnets to rock chips, so might as well go with the cheapest replacement glass. Also, make sure the installer does not damage the rubber molding/weatherstripping or improperly installs it back. It cost about $150 to replace those rubber pieces. I had to get my windshield installer to fix mine three times now because he didn't do it properly. I had him replace the original rubber weatherstripping that runs horizontally from passenger to driver side with a generic molding piece. It's attached with some sort of black rubber adhesive.

I have a crack in my '08's factory windshield that Safelite says is unrepairable (longer than a dollar bill). I talked the guy at one of the satellites down to $150 for an aftermarket installed.
If you go w/Safelite, ask for one by PPG. A ton of aftermarket manufacturers make windshields and you really never know what you're going to get, only that it was the low bidder when Safelite needed a batch of whatever they were low on. The guy was telling me that either PPG currently still does factory glass for Toyota or were one of the OEM companies in the past; I've seen PPG mentioned in these forums before too.
As far as I'm concerned, the only difference between OEM & aftermarket is the information printed in the bottom left corner, and the "hydrophobic" coating on the OEMs. And Safelite is a volume dealer so their rates are always negotiable.

I went to three of them on a 6 week drive trip,on and off road. Three different states and they had the previous repairs in each of the stores computers. At each store they appeared to be knowledgeable of the specific state laws and they was no hard sell. Only thing was each indicated my insurance company (State Farm) would cover it for free if I filled out a form they had. I opted to pay the fee myself. I believe(not sure) it was around $30 and I think there is a 1 year guarantee (again not sure). Would have to get out my receipts.
Take it to them and find out .
