Lets see if I can explain this

The TRAC OFF button in your 2WD 4Runner turns the traction control off, allowing you to easily spin both of the rear wheels without the TRAC system cutting the power to the slipping wheels. Overriding the traction control in 2WD 4Runners is as simple as hitting the TRAC OFF button.

4WD 4Runners do not have a TRAC OFF button. Instead, the only way to disable the TRAC system is to shift into 4WD and also lock the center differential

im not sure how much of a difference it made but for shits and giggles I decided to see how far I could get through this 4x4 trail called slaughter house in 2wd but...... I did have my rear locker on cause I was playing around with my new blue wire mod. Needless to say I made it through the whole trail except for 1 hill.
Oh and p.s. you dont NEED lifts. Everything except my engine is as stock as stock can be stock and look at my pics in my sig. And I run 265/75/16's which are just 5cm wider than stock, not taller.

Matt,it's not really a comparison with the 2wd crowd to compare your truck using your rear locker since no 2wd Runners have that option. Locking the rear is a big diff.

And my 265/75s are about .8 taller than the stock 265/65s. 265mm is the width of tread and the 65 is the percentage of the sidewall height to the treadwidth so 75% is a tad taller. I'll post pics comparing my mom's stock tires on her '99 Limited.

Definetly need 4wd for this and the rear locker probably made the diff.

It sounded worse than it was.
This was the damage and thankfully I had the unpainted valence vs the Limited and later Sport models painted pieces.

You have a 1999 which means that you do not have VSC or TRAC. Those two "features" were only put on the last (2001-2002) of the 3rd generation 4Runners

Not exactly sure which "mod" you are referencing here, but the only mod that disables the ABS is the Andymod.

Is that at slaughter house? if thats the hill I think it is, thats where I had to engage my 4wd. I never really had difficulty even though I had the locker on. But now that I think about it, its not so much the 4wd that's so important but the low range gears. A lot of that kind of stuff, in 2wd, you just wouldn't have the power to crawl over it.

I am living in San Diego and finding that I am going to Mexico all the time. Want to do some more adventerous stuff in Baja. My BMW X1 is great but the wheels and the car are getting thrashed.
Want to buy a used, in good condition Toyota 2WD SUV. In your folks opinion what is the best years and make for that?
My budget is under $8k.

good enough for prerunners right? lift kit/tires/locker....you should be good to go!

My old 94' was two wheel drive and I was basically limited to fire trails with packed dirt; moguls are impossible to get up. I wouldn't take a 2wd out far in the trails. If your thinking about adding a lift and tires to a 2wd, I think it would be a better investment to just sell it and by a 4x4.

I agree. You can also easily find one with a Diff lock for 8k...
