Off-Road Issue

I was planning on buying new BF Goodrich All Terrain tires for my 2005 this fall. Much to my dismay, BF Goodrich does not make a P265 65 17 tire in an T/A. They do make a BF Goodrich Rugged Trail T/A however. Does anyone own these tires? Do you like them?

Discount Tire said I could go with a 265 70 17 tire, but my speedometer and odometer would be thrown off a bit.

Check a Tacoma forum, those tires are offered in 16" for the TRD Off-Road package. I have them and they're pretty good on road, haven't tried wheeling those tires.

Unfortunately, they're right. If you go 1 step up or down on a sidewall you won't notice much difference. Using this:

If you were travelling 65 on 265/65's your speedo would read 62.85mph on the 265/70's. If it's an issue to you, that's understandable. I'm not crazy about going + / - myself either.

I've heard the Rugged Trail are crap, although they do look similar to the AT, they are still an H/T tire. I'd look at a Nitto Terra or the Pirelli ATR, or even the Goodyear Fortera (which I hear actually has proven to be a pretty good tire for an occasional trip down the trails.

There's always the ever-popular Revo as well. I bit the bullet and had to see what all the hype was about and purchased a set of 265/65/17 and they've done everything I had expected... but I don't do serious off-roading. We had a 14" of snow a month ago- no problem... also a few trips to an offroad park proved no problem either... but I wasn't in a bog either

My advice is to go up to the 70/17's , they look so much better , you can fit that size spare in there , and the little bit off in MPH you will never notice.

As a matter of fact it will save you some miles registered on the odo. & might even help you when your speeding since you are actually going a slight bit slower than the speedo reads , but actually travel more miles. Kinda like when you at the 20 over breaking point and the cops radar only say's 18 over , probably let you slide if not the 2 mph under twenty ( 18) will put you in a lower cost and point bracket than 20 over will.

At least here in Wi. thats how I always ran radar when I was "A serve and protect guy"

I looked in the mirror, the red lights blinkin , the cops was after my "Hot Rod Lincoln" ( ok 4Runner.) Sung by "Commander Coty and his lost Planet Airmen" OK i'm dating myself to far back.

Is it possible for the dealership to recalibrate the odometer and speedometer for the taller tire size?

My cousin has BFG's on his 1998 Cherokee and loves them. He says they are awsome in the snow and mud.

Thai loves the BFGs and I'm a supporter of the Nittos;both great off road but IMO the Nittos have the edge in daily driving and cost a lot less and there's quite a few 4th gens on this board running them. If you off road alot then the BFGs would get the nod due to their better sidewall construction.

I forgot about the Nitto TG's , never had them but supposed to be a good tire from what I hear. Price is nice too.

Never heard anyone complain about the Nitto's either. Good option Ron.

I have them on my 05. Like other's said, the spedo is off by about 3 mphs according to my gps. The spedo reads slower. It does not bother me at all. i think the truck looks alot better with the BFG's.

Agree completely. I would get the +1 upsizing 265/70/17. Who cares if you're off by 1-2 mph?!! The cool look of an off-road tire is THE REASON you buy it! I would NOT get BFG Rugged Trail or whatever it is...you're just changing to a tire that is equivalent to what you have on now (aka you're not upgrading).
