Off-roading/4-wheeling in Minnesota

So I just moved to Minnesota from California sold my prerunner and bought a 5th gen t4r 4x4 I am having an Offroad itch any Minnesotans on here know of a place I can wheel maybe set up a trip I'm just outside Minneapolis

Not from around there, but I have visited the Badlands and Yellowstone, and obviously that's a bit of hike from Minneapolis but well worth it. Great looking rig by the way!

Ya bad lands is on my list . And I literally drove through Yellowstone on my move up but didn't do any wheeling

Really just depends on what kind of trip you're looking for. Gilbert is up in the Duluth area with some fun and skinny trails Great option with trails for all levels. WI has some to offer as well, never been but probably not as much as you're used to, but it's there!
 
There's the Gandy Dancer trail in Pine County by Hinckley that's an ok trail and it's a lot closer than the iron range. Then there's Trollhaugen in Wisconsin that's pretty fun when you go over Memorial Weekend. There's supposedly a trail system down by Red Wing but I've never been there. Check out Go-4wheeling Club they organize trail rides and also swap meets(I used to be a member). There aren't as many trails as California mainly cuz all the rednecks around here like to go through mud bogs. On a side note there's a lot of old logging roads and forest service roads all over up north that are open to people to use they are just not as popular.
 
Iron Range is worth the trip just stay away from the rock gardens designed for buggies. I would be willing to run it again this fall but its got red mud that will stain everything if that bothers you.
 
Awesome thanks guys, i will definitely want to make a trip, since I'm new to the area are these places driveable in the winter when there is snow? Or is hit it during the fall or wait till spring ?

Late to the party - just moved to Duluth, MN with my 05 and am inspired to do some basic updates to get trail/camp ready. I'm no experienced to go extreme yet. Anybody from around here have any recommendations for a trusted mechanic to have a look and talk over options?
 
yep - from southern MN - love the snow!

Basically, I know my front suspension is going bad, don't want to sink a huge ton of money but at the same time this is my chance to start the upgrade from stock to make it more capable to get to the backcountry (overloading more than rock crawling) and explore a bit but its also my daily driver

Not certain where to start - i'll keep reading the forum but things go from basic to $$$$ really fast. May get there some day, I am somewhat mechanically inclined but don't have the tools or experience so I'm in search of a good mechanic first

Spider Lake and the Foothills State Forest in the Motley, Baxter area. Closer to the cities St. Croix and Nemadji SF, (Gandy Dancer - an old railroad bed) connects them, Cass County is a good area as well. Most are logging and Forest/Minimum maintenance roads. Midwest Overland Society on Facebook and our forum are good places to meet folks.

When have you been to Cass county? That's where my cabin is and I was just at spider lake yesterday on my day off. I go up to my cabin almost every weekend especially during the fall.

I was up there last weekend. Midwest Overland Society had our annual Rendezvous outside Backus. I cut through Spider Lake on the way home. Had to do a bit of backtracking due to the road closure for logging.

I was there this weekend with my dad in his jeep. A couple of weeks ago I took my 4Runner in there and found all the loggers and had to turn around. I went past one of the signs at first thinking it was just crappy trail conditions but then I saw where they were logging and turned around. The forest roads and logging trails around leech lake can get really rough and are some of my favorite.
 
Awesome, I want to check out Appleton.... but spider lake I want to check out I didn’t get any trails in this summer maybe I can squeeze one or two trip in this fall... if anyone wants to go please let me know.
