OFF ROADING FOR OUR HEROES
VETERAN’S DAY WEEKEND
November 11-13, 2011
Organized runs for Our Heroes and their families will take place on Saturday, Nov 12th.
Our heroes have often been through a great ordeal and having a spouse or loved one along with them will make the event much more enjoyable. If your vehicle can accommodate more than one passenger, it will be very helpful.
Staging location:Snow Valley Parking Lot @ 9:30 AM. Runs will leave Snow Valley starting at 10:00 AM.
Registration, Check-in & Vehicle Inspection: Friday, November 11th @ 2:00 pm and Saturday, November 12th @ 7:30 am. CA4WDC Safety requirements will be in place.
Runs: We will be running local Arrowhead and Big Bear trails. There is a possibility that snow will be on the trails and it more than likely will be cold. Plan accordingly. Friday and Sunday are available for open runs. You pick the trail and time. Have fun.
Parking: As of this date, parking for RVs and campers will be at Snow Valley Parking lot. Again, this time of year weather in the mountain areas can be unpredictable and parking may change.

Most of these individuals are Marines that were severely injured in combat to include amputees. They have opened it up to other branches of service but is being organized by the Warrior foundation a Marine program. There are currently 1000+ in San Diego batallion and expecting close to 500 of them up in Big Bear for this event. The organizers are hoping to have 250 4x4's with drivers knowledgeable of the Big Bear trails to take these Veterans and families around the Mountain.

Some of the Trails will be Clarks Grade, Holcomb, John Bull, Gold Mountain, Dishpan, 3N16to name a few.
 
VEHICLE SAFETY REQUIREMENTS

All vehicles must be maintained to conform to highway safety standards, as well as meet the minimum requirements listed below:

1. Roll bar or full cage or factory installed hard top
2. Emergency brake, parking brake, line-lock or other redundant braking system.
3. Tow strap or rope (recommended rated at 2 times the vehicle weight).
4. First aid kit.
5. Jack capable of lifting the vehicle and a tool capable of removing lug nuts.
6. Spare tire within 3” diameter of other tires, or, for tires 37” or larger, run flats or tools to repair/reinflate tire.
7. Fire extinguisher with gauge indicating good/full, appropriately stored.
8. Seat belts for all passengers.
9. Antennas must be rigid or restrained in a manner to prevent injuries.
10. Adequate attachment points front and rear, i.e., tow hooks, receiver, etc. Tow balls are not generally recommended.
11. Battery hold downs (no bungee cords).
 
sounds like a fun weekend, what if my vehicle does not meet those requirements? can I still join in and take some fairly ez trails?

Your truck must meet those minimum requirements to drive in the event and take the disabled vets around. You can volunteer to help in the staging area and registration.

I'm minus a fire extinguisher to meet the requirements, but that's not a hard add, or something I haven't thought about anyway.

3rdGENoobie what about your vehicle doesn't meet the requirements?

I won't know my actual availability to actually help until closer to the date though.
 
Well as it gets closer contact Scott and sign up if you are available. Plese post in here if you can make it so I can look for people.
 
sorry I read the tread again....

looks like its a 3 day event, I'm only free Saturday. u guys have fun, my truck is missing like 90 percent of the requirements. and I'm a rookie off roader.

let's plan another meet before the holidays guys maybe mid December?
 
They only need the 4x4's on Saturday.


***MEETING AND STAGING CHANGED***We are staging at Big Bear Convention Center 11/12/2011 - registration is at 8:00 am. Runs leave at 10:00 am. RV and parking has changed also.

Hey Pikeman,

So I'm thinking about joining in on this WW adventure. Although I don't have much experience up there around Big Bear. I do have a couple of guide books, the grapevine canyon sounds like a good time and somewhat easy/moderate. Unless you have a better idea for some trail runs. I'll email Scott today and see what he says.

The trail runs will already be set. The way most events like this work is at sign up they will ask how experienced you are and familiar with the area etc. while they are doing the tech/ safety inspection. In your case you will be put in middle of the group and will probably not be a trail leader or tail gunner. There will be be 10+ rigs in each group taking these Vets around. So it is a matter of follow the leader for the most part. Just like when we do the T4R meet/runs. You will have a Trail Leader and then a Tail gunner and sometimes a middle control. Kind of funny how similar it is to a military convoy command and control set up.
 
looks like snow snow and more snow.. Forecast for Friday High 45 low 26, 30% chance of rain. Saturday(day of main runs) High 36 Low 17, 60% chance Snow/rain. Bring snow chains and cold weather/ wet weather gear.

Champ that would have been great. I think it would also be inspiring to them for someone that is a little further along in the process showing that you can continue on. I have a two tours under my belt one in Iraq and one in Afghanistan and try to support Veterans events when I can.
 
I had one tour and it was a grueling two months. I'll actually be in Cali this weekend. Headed to San Diego to watch UNC play Michigan state on the aircraft carrier.
