Off-Roading Frustrations

it seems that everytime I go off roading and come to a mud hole I have problems. If I ever get in a place with either really thick and deep mud or I have to climb out of a hole I just can't get my tires to spin. This only happens in 2 wheel drive (but thats much more fun). I will lay on the gas and nothing happens, the engine won't even rev. Does anyone know why?

more simply...is there any way to lock in the differential and still be in 2 wheel-drive because if one tire gets stuck the other wont even spin no matter how much I try to accelerate. it could also be the traction control trying to kick in

The T4R has a center-locking diff. If you are in 2WD, there is no center diff to lock. You could purchase a rear-locker to get what you are looking for.

Your not playing fair

Dude, your trying to get your T4R to do what it is specifically designed not to do, spin tires. The VSC system is stopping it.

The answer to the question is

put it in 4X4 (if its a V6) (its always in 4x if its a V8)

and if lock your diff that will disable VSC

If you just want to spin the back wheels in 2WD then look under the hood and disconnect the electrical connection that is under the brake master cylinder (there is a link with a pic elsewhere on this web site) - that will disable the VSC and the airbag system (I think). When I tried it with mine, it will smoke the back tires on asphalt (both of them) - but dont crash the darn thing in that condition - I am pretty sure the insurance company will tell you, that you are on your own.

The only downside to disabling VSC is that once you turn it back on, you have to shut down and restart the engine to pick up the change. Disabling is on the fly and can be done without shutting down.

FJ's have a button, maybe the '08's have a button, but '03-'07 does not have this VSC defeat switch. The only way to get this functionality is to DIY. We have the ability to lock the center diff in 4WD which also defeats the VSC, but in 2WD, you have to add the switch yourself.

Locking the center diff does disable VSC. This guy wants to leave it in 2 wheel, disable the VSC and make himself some mad rooster tails.

I do have the '08 but I assumed all the 4th gens had that ability. '08 models do have the VSC switch and the ability to switch off the RSCA (Roll Sensing Curtain Airbags). Would that VSC mod for the older models also disable ATRAC???
