Off Roading in the Mid-Atlantic?

Hey all, I've had my new 2010 4Runner Trail Edition for almost a month now and I'm starting to get the itch... time to hit some trails. :guitar3:

I'm in Central Maryland and there is not too much good offroading in my locale. I'm willing to travel into the surrounding states (MD, PA, VA, WV, DE) in search of some good entry level trails.

My truck is bone stock right now, except for my DuraTracs which are going on next weekend. I don't plan on any lifts/mods for the next few years because, well, I'm now "car-poor." I'm looking for trails that offer a slight challenge and a scenic ride, but that aren't going take my $40k truck and turn it into a beater.

I don't mind mud, small rocks, sand, shallow water crossings, hillclimbs etc..., but I won't take it anywhere that I risk rolling it or smashing it up on trees, deep ruts or boulders. Basically, I wanna be able to wash it off and have it look like new again. Wishful thinking?

I'm open to suggestions. Are there any groups or clubs in the area for this? I'd like to get involved. My google search didn't come back with anything useful. Do any of you guys/gals get together and wheel? I've got a buddy with a new Tacoma TRD Offroad and we'll likely be heading out together wherever we go.

There's not too much in the area. You can hit the beaches like AI, or you can go west and I think there are some ORV trails in some MD state parks.

In PA there is Rausch Creek ORV park. VA has some trails but I've never been down there.

Yeah, that's what I'm finding. I may have to go explore and find them myself... sounds like work to me. Fun work.

I'm gonna keep searching online.

Some of the state parks in western MD have some mild trails (GRSF for one).
Rausch Creek in PA has mild to wild.
Crozet in VA is pretty much all hardcore.
Big Dogs in VA has some mild ones too, but they're open summer only.
GWNF in VA is great for noobs.
 
And FYI, if your caught offroad on private property in MD, you get hauled in and your truck gets impounded.
 
I used google earth to find a few small trails (powerline access routes in annapolis area and an industrial park built over an old farm yielded some dirt and gavel trails in Hanover MD)

About the truck hauling on privite property, Have u had experience with this?? and if there is no private property boundry/signs do you get a free-bee (refering to the powerline access trails, which I know is a no trespasing zone but was planing on playing dumb, because there is absolutely no signs or fences:withstupid:)

I plan on making a camping trip to either Green Ridge SF or back out to shenandoah in the fall going to try doing some easy riding (my whip is still stock also, but I will definetly have my new tires buy then and possibly going to pick up a simple topout lift for the xreas.... I'm waiting until they die or my truck get paid off to replace them)

You might get away with playing dumb, might not. Depends on whose property it is.
And you will not get away with anything at GRSF, or any of the other ones in MD.
The DNR doesn't play games.
 
your best bet is probably green ridge and GWNF. Big Dogs is only open to special events and not very stock friendly. You would probably be ok at Rausch on the green trails but they charge a lot for one day of wheeling. They opened a new section but not sure what that is like.
 
The "ORV trails" are part of the normal dirt roads thru the forest.

You only need the ORV pass for an ATV, which would be restricted to the specific roads.

I'm looking to go up to the Garrett county area this Wednesday to play around. I'm all stock for now so i cant get too crazy....any updates on this area that may be helpful to me?

What is GRSF? I googled it and come up with Great River Shakespeare Festival as my top hit.

GWNF is "George Washington National Forest".
 
The Green Ridge State Forest ORV trail was closed a couple of years ago, but the fire roads and open trails are still fun to drive on and they are easy on your truck , there are some easy stream crossings and other areas that are fun to visit. The area in general is a fun place to spend a weekend;
-Great smallmouth fishing on the Potomac.
-Great store/bar to hangout at, Bills Place, unfortunately Bill lost his battle with cancer, but his son Jack still runs it.
-Scenic overlooks
-Cool Railroad tunnels to checkout, Pawpaw tunnel,etc.
-There`s a great campground to stay at, Little Orleans Campground
-Old cemeteries scattered through-out the forest.
If you need any info. let me know, I have spent a lot of time up there in the past 25 years, and still go up on a regular basis.
