Off-roading/traversing near Bryan/CS TX

Hi,

I have see few threads with related subjects, however what I have seen has been focused on off-road parks that are specific for this purpose and that focus on mud riding.(requiring a fee and having specific hours etc...). I would like to obtain information on where to find good trails that are not in a controlled type environment, but rather a trail that leads to some place that is not normally accessible by non-4wd car.

For example does any one know where to find a 4wd trail within a national forest or park....(I have searched around Bryan TX and all I can find a roads where only ATVs can go). I would also like to camp along the way if possible (primitive camp) and set up a tent and not be bothered by large numbers of people.

In principle this does not sound too hard ..but so far It seems that most land within central TX is privately owned and many instances that seem like a good trail in a national forest or park are always blocked out or fenced....quite annoying..

I am new to this off-roading so I need some help of where to look....
Any suggestions???? I am willing to drive up to 4 hours from the Bryan CS area.

We have been working on routes in and around Texas. Here is our progress thus far...

If you need specific details about routes, let me know and I can send you .gdb or .gpx files. The Roads of Texas Atlas is also an excellent resource for finding dirt and gravel roads, although I have yet to find any long "trails" in Texas outside of Big Bend... all of them have been gated off. I would like to put a route together that runs along the coast as well, but need to make sure certain areas are legal for vehicular travel first.

Let me know if you would like to help scout routes. We need all the help we can get right now... just so much distance to cover in Texas.

Mr Leary,

Thanks for the info, I quickly browsed the link you pointed me too and it definitely looks more along the lines of the kid of off-roading I have in mind!
I would love to get to know more about your experience in this type of overland travel.
I am not familiar with the .gdb or gdx files...but I did a quick search and it looks like google earth supports this format. I would live to get these files to see what kind of routes are available.

I will try to send you a private message via this forum with my contact information.
How big are these files? can they be sent easily as an e-mail attachment?

Thanks for your response, I look forward to find more about where to travel in TX.

I am 72 miles from Bryan, if you ever want to caravan.. give me a PM.. I am totally Game.

BVORR is in Bryan, TX4WD Bryan chapter meets twice a month on the grounds, free wheeling. Great experience, technical and generally scary off camber climbs and stuff. Hidden Falls, Long's Ranch close to Austin and Barnwell in Gilmer, Tx.

Bryan, Texas! The thread title jumped out at me.

I grew up in College Station for 18 years, before moving to Denver.

Sorry, I'm no help though, I wasn't wheeling in those years. I just posted because I thought it was neat to hear someone talking about that area. My folks still live there...Dad's getting ready to retire from the University.

I like it a lot, if I didn't need the big city Job... I would probably live there.
