I would suggest leaving the spare gas can at home to save space and weight. They are unnecessary here unless you plan to get 8 MPG. None of our roads are that remote and towns will always be at, or near, one end of the trail or the other.
Bring a camera!
The end of September is prime for fall colors, though with the very cool weather we've had all summer, it is possible that the leaves might change a bit earlier this year. I would still suggest pushing the trip back at least to the 4th week to come out if you're able to swing it.

There are always individual trees that kind of turn at the end of August, so it's nothing unusual what people have been reporting here, and throughout the country for that matter. I've seen some light-colored trees during my recent outings as well. Some of the color change is stress-induced. Prolonged rain causing a saturated soil profile, prolonged drought, or a drastic climate change lasting more than a week will all cause leaf drop. It's been nice and wet here this summer, so it shouldn't be related to the drought.
Peak colors here will always range from September 17 (rare) to October 10, with the 27th usually being a good target date, depending on the region. It won't be any earlier than that this year, either, and I can guarantee that! Now watch, now that I've said that, you can probably expect peak color next week!
